Quiz #2 “What did TRex Taste Like”
Purpose: Use the cladogram and data on inherited features to make hypotheses about what T. rex was like.
Materials needed:

•
Cladogram and Additional Data
Your completed Features Table as you go through the screens.
You will turn in the answers to the Special Assignment which is the very last screen and you will not
know the answers unless you have read and answered the questions before Special Assignment.

Examine the questions below. For each of the questions:
1. Decide if it is possible to answer the question with the data provided (the cladogram and data tables).
2. If it is not possible, what information is needed to be able to answer the question?
3. If it is possible, what kind of hypothesis would you make? What is the evidence for your statement? In
your justification, make sure that you include information about common ancestors and shared inherited
features. What other evidence would you look for that would support or refute your hypothesis?
What other kinds of questions might be answered using the cladogram and data tables? Provide at least two
other ways to use the data in a cladogram.
Table #1
Special Assignment
Questions to answer (read ahead of time but answer after
the activity using the information gathered in the tables
on the p.2 of the lab.
1. Did T. rex have an amniotic egg?
Table 1 gives you reasoning that it is possible for it to have an
amniotic egg, but there is not enough evidence within the exercise
to support such claim.
2. Was T. rex warm-blooded or cold-blooded?
It is a warm-blooded species.
3. Could T. rex have had feathers?
Yes, it is possible to have had feathers, but there’s not enough
Evidence to prove if they did or not.
4. Did T. rex have color vision?
Just like the caiman and parrot, it also has colored vision.
5. How many chambers were there in T. rex's heart?
Approximately, there are 4 chambers within its heart, since it shares more characteristics with the
parrot.
6. Did T. rex provide parental care for its offspring?
Though there isn’t enough evidence about behaviors to prove this, I think it’s safe to assume that it would
actually provide parental care for its offspring.
Fill out the data tables on this side to help you answer the questions on side 1.
Below is a simple cladogram #1, you must indicate the proposed characteristics that could distinguish the
relationship among the caiman, parrot, and T. rex.
The data table #1 indicates the presence or absence of eleven additional features for the caiman and the parrot.
Notice that the information about the T. rex has not been filled in. You will need to make that determination
based upon what you have learned and recorded in tables #2 & #3. As you explore Folder 4, fill in the data
tables 2 & 3 below, using a 1 for trait present and 0 for trait absent
