Teacher asks Elijah to take a minute to calm down and decide if he wants to finish his work or not. Function: Escape/Avoidance Attention Seeking Preventions New Skills New Responses In order to prevent this trigger, the teacher could establish timelines for Elijah before work is started. The teacher could also provide a visual timer or allow Elijah to time himself using his phone so that he is prepared to stop working. This will also eliminate the frustration that comes from his fear of not finishing on time. Elijah will need to better manage his time and use resources/tools if necessary. He will also have to learn to express his frustration with the teacher. If he needs more time to complete an assignment, asking the teacher should be the first reaction. The teacher will also need to teach Elijah that turning in unfinished work is sometimes okay and that classwork is a way to gauge his understanding not a punishment. To New Behaviors: Teacher will speak with Elijah privately and let him know that he is doing a great job. (Public praise often embarrasses him) To Old Behaviors: Teacher will remind Elijah that there are ways he can keep track of time; recognize his frustration early and give him extra time to complete work.
