There are so many historical places in this world and every place has its own history and importance. I had an opportunity to visit two historical forts of USA during my stay. Visiting of any historical site not only improve our knowledge but also gives us a new story and a new lesson for life. We can perceive the old lifestyle and what they used to do to survive. Forts are monuments to day’s gone past – actual structures that have witnessed the progress of history and changes in American culture. The word “fort” came from the Latin fortis which stands for "strong, mighty, or brave.” A fort is a place that's made strong and secure enough for the purpose of defence against attacks and usually having troops stationed. It is meant to defend cities, border outposts, sea or river coasts, and trading centers. The Alamo –Texas The Misión San Antonio de Valero commonly called “The Alamo” is a historic Spanish mission and fortress compound founded in the 18th century by Roman Catholic missionaries in San Antonio, Texas, United States. In 1803, it was converted into a garrisoned fortress, during which time it acquired the name “Alamo.” San Antonio, still considered by some to be Mexico’s northernmost city, is now America’s seventh largest- a sprawling metropolis. With a population of 1.49 million that’s 63 percent Hispanic, it’s no surprise that San Antonio celebrates its Mexican roots through food, the arts and history. The Battle of the Alamo, possibly one of the most famous battles in U.S. history was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege(February 23 – March 6, 1836), Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna reclaimed the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States), killing the Texian and immigrant occupiers. Santa Anna's cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians, both legal Texas settlers and illegal immigrants from the United States, to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the rebellion. When the Mexican army retreated, they destroyed much of the fort. In 1892, conservation efforts began. After many squabbles and disagreements, portions of what had been the chapel were finally restored. Today, the Alamo is a museum that receives millions of visitors each year. Old Fort Niagara Some of the historical places are very interactive with nature Old fort of Niagara is such an/a artifact/ precedent. Old Fort Niagara, located near Youngstown, New York, on the eastern bank of the Niagara River at its mouth, on Lake Ontario, controlled access to the Great Lakes and the westward route to the heartland of the continent. The history of Old Fort Niagara spans more than 300 years. This fortification was originally built to protect the interests of New France in North America later it was occupied by three nations: France, Great Britain, and the United States. The French established the first post in 1679 and built the impressive "French Castle" in 1726. It still stands today. Britain gained control of the fort in 1759 during the French and Indian War and maintained control throughout the American Revolution, yielding it to the United States in 1796. The fort was captured by the British during the War of 1812 until being ceded again to the United States in 1815 after which time it served as a peaceful border post. Old Fort Niagara served as a training station and active barracks from the Civil War until the last army units were withdrawn in 1963.
