Run-on Sentence and Comma Splice Ms. Jessa C. Cartel Grade 8 Run-on Sentence • It contains two independent clauses that have been incorrectly joined together. It occurs when a writer puts no mark of punctuation and no coordinating conjunction between independent clauses. Example: • The flowers are beautiful they brighten the room. First complete sentence Second complete sentence (Incorrectly joined) Three (3) Ways to fix it: • 1. ADD PERIOD Example: The flowers are beautiful. They brighten the room. • 2. ADD A COMMA AND A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION (FANBOYS) Example: The flowers are beautiful, and they brighten the room. FANBOYS • FOR • AND • NOR • BUT • OR • YET • SO 3. ADD A SEMICOLON EXAMPLE: The flowers are beautiful; they brighten the room. Let’s have another example! Incorrect: Psychohistory is a relatively new type of study it combines the insights of psychology with the data of history. Correct: Psychohistory is a relatively new type of study; it combines the insights of psychology with the data of history. Incorrect: “You” is a second person pronoun rarely used in the South most Southerners use “y‘all” instead.” Correct: “You” is a second person pronoun rarely used in the South; most Southerners use “y‘all” instead.” Let’s Review!!! 3 Ways to correct a run-on: • ADD PERIOD. The flowers are beautiful. They brighten the room. • ADD A COMMA AND A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION (FANBOYS). The flowers are beautiful, and they brighten the room. • ADD A SEMICOLON. The flowers are beautiful; they brighten the room. COMMA SPLICE • It occurs when two or more independent clauses are joined by just a comma and no coordinating conjunction. • We need a (FANBOYS) to help out. Coordinating Conjunctions • FOR • AND • NOR • BUT • OR • YET • SO COMMA SPLICE Ex: • Incorrect: The flowers are beautiful, they brighten the room. (Improperly joined with only a comma) • Corrected sentence: The flowers are beautiful, and they brighten the room. Let’s have another example!
