Unit 11 Handling Data Dear Parent or Guardian, During this unit, your child will be consolidating their learning about handling data and probability. They carry out an extended investigation using all the data handling techniques that they have learned over the previous stages. In this unit, they will learn to: interpret statistics that are used in everyday life use mean, median, mode and the range to interpret data find the probability of events happening list equally likely events. Listing possible outcomes When you roll a fair dice you are equally likely to get one The diagram shows the probability of throwing different scores on a fair dice. of six possible outcomes 1 1 1 1 1 1 6 6 6 6 6 6 Since each number on the dice is equally likely the probability of getting any one of the numbers is 1 divided by 6 or 1/6. We will be using real-life data that we draw from the internet or that children find for themselves through surveys and questionnaires. We will also carry out practical probability experiments. You can help by looking for graphs and charts in the media and discussing with your child what the graphs represent. © Oxford University Press 2018
