EXPOSITORY WRITING
COURSE GUIDE
Only by yourself you can finish this course successfully. Finishing this course needs your
diligence, perseverance and determination. This module is designed for you to learn and hone your skills
in expository writing as part of your academic life and future professional life as well. Though you will
learn independently through this module, your course facilitator will always be there to guide you,
coach you and practice with you. All you need to do is follow the instructions written in this guide to the
heart. Comply the tasks that are needed since it will develop your skill step by step. At the end of this
course, it is you who will benefit from all the learnings you will get. And as your facilitator, I assure you
that you will enjoy this endeavor and learn at the same time.
Now, I want you to consider the following pieces of advice carefully.
A. STUDY DISCIPLINE
1. Manage your time wisely in reading and understanding the content of this module. You are wellguided step by step, so as to simplify and make things more organized for you to better
understand. Note that we cannot perform several online activities synchronously because of the
unstable internet connection for most of us. So spend your time wisely so you may be able to
comply with the requirements your facilitator will give you within a specific timeframe.
2. Always remember that all of your activities are time bound.
3. Study how you can manage to do the activities of this course in consideration of your other
modules from other courses. Be very conscious with the study schedule. If possible, post this
guide to a place where you can see easily see this.
4. Log into the course site regularly. If you can visit the site most often, then do it.
5. Always be alert with important announcements.
6. Do not procrastinate. Work on time. This is because you have other courses also and you do not
want to be overwhelmed with requirements in the coming days.
7. Before you start doing your tasks, read and understand the assessment tools provided. Read
carefully the directions. Not following directions may lead your output to errors.
8. Be sure you will not miss any unit or tasks. You can do an advance reading or you can perform
tasks in advance.
9. Most of the course discussions will be conducted using Microsoft Teams. As a further aid to
ensure learning, your facilitator may add at least one more LMS like Google Classroom.
10. Discussion/Forums Board: Please take note of the following guidelines when you are inside the
online classroom.
11.
12.
13.
14.
15.
a. Your post should be composed of complete and grammatically correct sentences. Do not
use abbreviations and acronyms unless these are introduced in the readings, and do not
write in text-speak. Avoid writing in all caps.
b. Post appropriate and well-thought rejoinders. Avoid merely approving or disapproving with
your classmates and course facilitators. You need to support your inputs in the discussions
from reliable information and resources. Do not post uninformed opinions.
c. React and analyze the contributions made by your classmates in the discussion forums.
Respond appropriately and courteously. Always use proper language.
d. Be polite and respectful arguing a point and in defending your opinions. Do not be rude and
do not make remarks that may be construed as a personal attack. Refer to
ideas/statements, not the person. Remember that the objective of academic discussion is to
develop your critical and analytical thinking skills apart from contributing to the wealth of
knowledge.
e. Do not post lengthy contributions. Stick to the point. Be clear what your main point is and
express it as concisely as possible. Do not let the discussions stray.
f. Quote your sources in the online discussion by mentioning the last name of the author and
the year. No need to use the particular style.
g. Protect your privacy. Think before you post. If you wish to share something private, do it by
email or private chat.
Remember that under this course, you will be writing and writing sentences and paragraphs
most of the time. Encoding through a tablet is surely a tedious work. To help your eyes from to
much screen exposure, you can write in a pen and paper your essay, check its construction and
grammar, so that by the time you will encode it you will have a straight through and minimal
screen exposure.
Do not plagiarize and do not patch write. Patchwriting is still a form of plagiarism. As per
standard, you are only allowed at least 10% percent of the content of your source reading, book,
journal, etc.
Observe proper citation when you post/cite a statement from a book.
Note that our Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom is a virtual learning environment, not a
social networking site. Use recent an appropriate ID photo on your profile page for proper
identification.
Lastly, your family members and friends at home will support you but the activities must be
done by you. As an Alfonso, you always need to demonstrate our core values of INTEGRITY,
COMPASSION & EXCELLENCE.
B. TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS
1. You are entrusted with a valuable device- your Tablet. Dr. Jennifer Wee Tan, our City Mayor
once said that “Always remember, pag naggunit na mo sa inyong tablet, naggunit pod mo sa
inyong kaugmaon” (As you hold that tablet, you are also holding your future). [15:24-15:30]
