The Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) tagged as the as the only accredited professional organization for the chemical engineers, has remained strong amidst challenges and has lived up to its mandate in protecting and promoting chemical engineering profession in the pursuit of its highest ethical and professional standards. This year marks the 80th founding year (Jubilee Milestones) of PIChE as a professional organization. This year’s convention was hosted by PIChE CAMANAVA, with the theme “Exergy: Radiating the Culture of Excellence Across Generations”. The theme conveys how a maximum useful work of a chemical engineer can translate into a certain point of equilibrium and excellence in order to radiate such culture that can be passed on to the next generation. This also gives focus on opportunities and challenges for the future chemical engineers. The convention’s learning and development tool, including its plenary and technical sessions have been designed covering a wider scope of chemical engineering professional practices which includes among others industry equipment and standards, water and wastewater, emerging industries, climate change adaptation and mitigation, chemical engineering and agriculture, alternative sources of energy, people and project management, industrial synthesis, relevant government regulations and chemical engineering curriculum. Objective/s: The annual convention has the following objectives: 2|Page a. To update the members of the organization on the current developments in the Chemical Engineering profession concerning education, industry and government. b. To increase the level of awareness and capabilities of chemical engineers on their possible contributions to national development. c. To provide a lifelong career developments of its members and promote ethical practice of Chemical Engineering profession in the country. d. To aid in the advancement of the technical competence of its members and stimulate participation in endeavors that aim to address national and international concerns related to industries, academe, economy and environment. Technical Tour Evaluation of the Intervention as to Relevance to you, your Responsibility Center and to this Authority: 1. To YOU, as Participant/s As participants for the second time around, the convention breaks the monotony of the usual eight-hour daily work and provides an opportunity for the fellow chemical engineers to find a new venture, career growth and self-motivation. Being employed in a corporate agency, sometimes we do ask ourselves on what unprecedented impacts we could make or contribute as a chemical engineer working for the Authority. There may be some instances that we might feel underrated/undervalued due to limited opportunities and career development for the chemical engineers in the sector of port operations. Attending this convention was able to enhance our knowledge further and has deepen our appreciation for the career path we have chosen. It motivates us to further push ourselves for excellence in optimizing our own talents in the creation and formulation of environmental policies and guidelines for welfare of the port community. 2. To your Responsibility Center and to This Authority The learnings that we have acquired from the convention specifically on the topics of climate change adaptation and mitigation and challenges on the strict implementation of environmental laws, can be useful inputs in the ongoing drafting of implementing guidelines of Port Environmental Policy (PEP). Before, port authority focuses more on the effect of the environment and natural phenomena on port operations rather than the effect of port operations in the environment. Nowadays, port authorities are becoming more proactive in terms of abating the effects of port operations in the environment by introduction of several sustainability measures to cut down emissions on water, air and hazardous waste. Although the work and functions of chemical engineers in the port operations maybe confined in the environmental monitoring and compliance, handling and management of dangerous goods and other chemicals in the ports can be better managed and supervised by a chemical engineer. Handling of chemicals and dangerous goods in a port has its own peculiar risk. More so would there be a greater risk for the potential for the spillage of hazardous material in the water course, with a comparable risk in terms of safety of the people and the facilities. There comes the role, knowledge and intervention of chemical engineers to prevent such events from happening. 5|Page IV.
