The Junior Secondary School Leaving Examination is based on the two-year course covering Grades 8 and 9. In 2019, the Examinations Council of Zambia undertook examination reforms which saw an introduction of School Based Assessments (SBA) for all practical papers and changes in some theory papers. As a result, English Language Paper 1 has been reformed in terms of content, mark and time allocation. A new component – Summary – has been introduced in Paper 1. Assessment Objectives (AO) AO1 Knowledge and Application of Communication Skills AO2 Reading and Comprehension of Texts AO3 Knowledge and Application of Language Structure AO4 Analysis and Synthesis of Information (Composition) AO5 Evaluation and Synthesis of Information (Summary) Test Design The English Language Examination will comprise Papers 1 and 2. SECTION B: SUMMARY [20 MARKS] You are advised not to spend more than 30 minutes on this section. Read the following passage and answer the question that follows. 1 I had been seeing groups of young people standing aimlessly near the shopping mall close to my house. When I asked what they were doing, one of them said that they were ‘chilling’. I later understood that the term was used to refer to a new pastime activity among young people. However, it was only after I had heard the story of Misozi that it became clear to me as to the unacceptable behaviour the youth engaged in and the negative effects they suffered in the name of chilling. 2 Misozi woke up for the third time that night. Her lack of sleep was a result of what she had gone through that afternoon. She was disturbed. There she was in the hospital bed and everything seemed like a bad dream. It was only by sheer luck that she was not in the mortuary like her friend Beauty who had suffered a premature death. 3 Beauty’s stories of how she enjoyed her weekends had made Misozi very curious. She had looked forward to the day when she would have a chance to chill with her peers. Her mother had always warned her against bad company and going out without her permission. However, that afternoon she had failed to resist peer pressure and agreed to go chilling with a group of other Grade Nines. 4 Misozi’s mother was not at home and Misozi saw an opportunity in her mother’s absence. She decided to disobey her instructions. After searching her mother’s bedroom, Misozi stole the only hundred kwacha note that was there. After a quick lunch, Misozi hurried to join Beauty at a spot they had agreed to meet. There were six other girls there who teased Misozi because of her kind of dressing. One of them opened her backpack and took out a pair of skinny jeans. She gave them to Misozi to wear. Misozi quickly changed into an attire that exposed part of her body against her mother’s counsel on indecent dressing. Soon they were joined by a group of boys. English/101/1/2020 Page 5 of 6 5 They first went to a shopping mall where one seemingly rich boy bought drinks for them. Everyone was in a jovial mood. They decided that it would be more interesting at a nearby play park. 6 At the park, Misozi started seeing strange behaviour in her friends. There were more and more drinks, even alcoholic ones. One boy had a strange powder that they were sniffing. Some were even smoking. Beauty disappeared for a while and then reappeared looking more excited than before. She asked Misozi to escort her to the bathroom. Instead of going inside, she led her behind the building. Some boys and girls were busy having unprotected sex there. Misozi was pulled by a strong hand and her mouth was covered. She felt someone undressing her. She tried to struggle but was overpowered. She fainted. When she awoke, she was in a hospital bed. 7 She was told that she had been brought in from the park. Some boys had started a fight. There was a lot of swearing and insulting. One boy was badly injured. Trying to stop the fight, Beauty had hit her head against a sharp rod and she bled to death. The police had been informed. They picked up Misozi. The rich boy and four others were arrested because they had drugs. He was a member of a drug pushing group and was introducing other young people to drugs as a way of promoting the business. It was obvious that they would be taken to court and would be imprisoned for many years. That would be the end of schooling for them. Beauty’s body was taken to the mortuary. One boy who had escaped and knew that the police would be looking for him, committed suicide. 8 Misozi’s medical examination revealed that she had been raped by more than one boy. She risked contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV and AIDS. Her story was all over the papers, on television and radio. How was she going to face her mother? Would her mother trust her anymore? Their relationship would be ruined. What about school? Everyone would frown at her. The stigma would be too much. She decided that she would not go back to school anymore. She could not believe how the events of a single afternoon could turn her whole life upside down. If only she had listened to her mother, she would still have been a happy child. English/101/1/2020 Page 6 of 6 Now answer the following question. With close reference to the passage, list down twenty unacceptable behaviour that youth engage in and the negative effects they suffer because of chilling. Your summary should be in note form.
