Attendance Policy
Attendance
Unless stated otherwise in the course syllabus, students must be in the classroom when the
class is scheduled to begin. As determined by the GUST clock seen from the classroom door,
the door may be closed when class is scheduled to begin or any time after that. If you find the
door closed, it means “You are late and are absent for today. Do not knock and disturb the
ongoing class. You must arrive earlier next time.” simply leave and come earlier to the next
class. Do not knock or try to gain entry or an Incident Report may be filed.
According to GUST policies, class attendance is mandatory and will be monitored. Students
who miss classes will naturally earn lower grades. Once an FA is received, it cannot be removed.
You are absent each time:
▪
▪
▪
▪
you do not come to class;
you do not bring your student ID card to class;
you forget to swipe your student ID card before attendance is closed;
you arrive after the classroom door is closed or the attendance system is closed
Your instructor will never remove an absence except when you swipe your ID card and it
does not register. You must immediately show this to your instructor or nothing can be
done at a later time. If this happens, you have until the next class to have your card checked
and reissued if needed.
GUST's class attendance regulations will be followed:
Fail to attend 2 classes (1 class for M/W) => Warning I
Fail to attend 4 classes (3 classes for M/W) => Warning II
Fail to attend 6 classes (4 classes for M/W) => Warning III
Fail to attend 9 classes (6 classes for M/W) => FA
This means that 8 absences is the maximum you are allowed for STT classes (5
absences for MW classes). Once an FA has been received it cannot be removed
according to the University’s attendance policy. WA grades are no longer in
effect.
Make Up
As a general policy of this class there are no make ups for quizzes, projects and any ad-hoc
assignments given in class. Students that do not turn in the assignments on the due dates as
announced will get no grade for this assignment; however, if with proper documentation the
student maybe given the opportunity to make up an exam. This must be done in accordance
with the University Policy of excused absences as stated below.
Students may reattempt the MOS exams as many times as needed, in case they wish to pass
the exams.
Excused absences
You will need to provide documentation for your absence in the case of: 1) Hospital admission. 2) Death of a first degree relative. 3) Participation in sport tournaments representing
Kuwait.
The documentation has to be provided in hard copy or emailed to Ms. Reem Adnan at (Mustafa.r@gust.edu.kw). Ms. Reem will kindly be emailing your faculty about your absence
and copying you on the email. These are counted as excused absence which means you will
still be marked absent, as you are not physically in class, but allowed to re-sit any missed assessments and submit any missed assignments/work.
The 3 days absence of mourning leave is ONLY removed for death of first degree relative according to GUST’s BOT decision.
Please make sure you discuss any issues you might have with absence with your OSC advisor as they will be able to advise you about your options of continuing in the particular semester or deferring your studies.
Academic Integrity (Refer to student handbook)
As a student GUST, you are expected to demonstrate academic integrity by completing your
own work, assignments and assessments. Effective planning and progress must be accomplished for students to be successful in their degree program of study. Submission of work from
another person, whether it is from printed sources or someone other than the student; previously
graded papers; papers submitted without proper sources citation; or submitting the same paper
to multiple courses without the knowledge of all instructors involved can result in a failing
grade or be reported to the appropriate administrative entities for appropriate sanctions or disciplinary actions. You are expected to maintain the standards as set forth in the Student Code
of Conduct and Statement on Academic Honesty.
More Polices and Rules
1. READ YOUR GUST EMAIL and check the portal (MY GUST) EVERY DAY so you
do not miss important messages.
2. NO FOOD AND/OR BEVERAGES (except bottled water) are permitted in the classroom. Food and beverages must be left outside the classroom.
3. ENGLISH ONLY. The official language of instruction at GUST is English. Continually improving your English language skills is important to your success at GUST and
with future employers. Use English only in this classroom at all times, and anytime you
speak with your instructor.
4. YOUR FINAL GRADE is based only on the quality of your work, assignments turned
in when due, and the grading system described in the syllabus for the course. “Effort”
and “time spent” are not considerations with university work. If you want a higher grade,
you must earn it during the semester. You are urged to keep all scored work that has
been returned in case there is a difference in the recorded score. If you have any question
about the scoring of an assignment, you must notify your instructor.
5. Your instructor will help you understand your assignments. Your instructor will help
you understand your scores and what you need to do to improve. However, your instructor will never “help” any student with a grade higher than earned. That is, “NO HELP
WITH GRADES. Kindly do not ask!” Being on probation, needing a higher GPA, or
needing to graduate are not acceptable justifications and will not affect your grade.
6. Cell phones and similar electronic devices must be turned off before class begins, and
kept off during the entire class. Anyone seen by the instructor with an active cell phone
or similar device must immediately leave the classroom for the remainder of the class
and will be marked absent for the day. Failure to immediately comply may result in a
formal Incident Report being filed.
