Solution
Read the information below and make notes of some of the possible solutions.
Visitors to Antarctica want to see penguins, seals and whales in their natural habitat and they
want to go to the most picturesque places. They also go to enjoy skiing, walking, climbing
and kayaking. Any visitors must now have a permit to step foot on the continent. There are
areas called ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) where the wildlife and landscape is
protected – visitors are not allowed to enter these sites. Fishing is not banned but fishing
boats have to report how much they have caught so that their impact can be assessed. There
are strict regulations that scientific bases have, in order to create as little waste as possible to
prevent pollution. Sewage and food waste is treated and turned to sludge which is then put
into an incinerator (a waste burner).

Remember the Butler model?
Butler’s idea was that most tourist resorts go through a six stage cycle of tourism. He thought that
most tourist resorts start on a very small scale and got bigger and bigger until stagnation occurs
(becomes inactive). Thinking about Benidorm, can you put the six stages in the correct order on the
Butler model above?

Spain develops the area, advertises it
as a holiday destination. It becomes
well-known and popular with tourists.
Benidorm is a fishing village with
unspoilt, sandy beaches.
Visitors stop going because it is busy
and overcrowded. Facilities become
run down. Spain must decided
whether to REJUVENATE or let it go
into DECLINE.
Local people start to realise that they
can make money from tourism and
provide facilities for the visitors.
Government choose to rejuvenate
the resort with new attractions like
water parks and theme parks.
If the government chose to let it
decline the shops and bars would
close down and tourists would no
longer want to come.

Primary resources – natural resources (climate, scenery, culture, historical, religious).
Secondary resources – what has been put there by us (infrastructure, hotels, entertainment,
restaurants…)
Annotate the image below with primary and secondary resources.
Impact of tourism on Peru
Underline key information about the human impact of tourism on Aguas Calientes.
Machu Picchu in Peru has 500,000 visitors every
year. In the valley below is the tourist town called
Aguas Calientes. Because there are so many
tourists coming to the area, the town has been
over-developed. Hotels have been built on steep
hillsides and the forests have been removed to
make more land for building. However heavy
rainfall has caused landslides which have killed
people and destroyed homes. The trees would
have soaked up the rainwater and the roots
would have held the hillsides together.
Around the mountains, large amounts of litter can be seen and rubbish is dumped into the Urubamba river
which is used as a water source by people.

Development Gap
Countries develop (improve) at different rates. The gap between rich and poor countries is
widening – this is called the ‘development gap.’
How do we measure development?
Development was measured using GNI (Gross National Income) – adding together all the
money earned and dividing by the total number of people living in the country. This is not a
good method because most of the population could be living in poverty while most of the
wealth is with a few people.
Human Development Indicators (HDIs) are a better method – using a combination of life
expectancy, adult literacy and income you can spend. It is ranked between 0-1. The closer
to 1, the more developed the country.

Using tourism to reduce the development gap
A less developed country can make good use of its location, weather, scenery, beaches and
wildlife etc to attract tourists which can help them to reduce the development gap.
Belize is a tiny less developed
country in Central America. The
Caribbean Sea is to its East.
Belize is using tourism as a way
to reduce the development gap.
