Q 10
A one line answer to the question “Why artificial satellites remain in orbit and do not fall
to earth ?” would be that they are always falling but are also constantly moving forward due
to the momentum they get during launch along the tangential path in the form if kinetic
energy.
Since, there is nothing but vacuum in the outer space to restrict the motion of the satellite they
always move at a constant velocity. The tangential component of this velocity along the
pulling force of gravitation imparts a centripetal acceleration to the satellite making the
satellite to revolve along the earth. The distance at which the satellite remains during the
revolutions remains constant and the path travelled by it is known as orbit.

This centripetal acceleration imparts centrifugal force which is balanced out by the force of
gravitation and the satellite attains the state of equilibrium. And the satellite remains in the
same orbit forever unless the velocity is changed.
Gravitational Force = Centrifugal force
GMm/r^2 = m(V^2)/r
V = sqrt(GM/r)
Therefore if is safe to say, that orbits are dedicated to particular velocities.
