NOTICE AND WONDER
PROTOCOL
DM 1
STEP 1
• Participants are presented with a table or graph of data.
STEP 2: NOTICE
• Each participant receives a 5x7 note card
• Quietly and individually write down four observations
• Observations are free of inference or speculation – factual base
• “I notice that………)
• 5 minutes
STEP 3: ROUND 1
• Identify a scribe
• Each participant reads aloud one observation (avoid repeats)
• Process continues until all observations have been recorded
• No discussions
• 5 minutes
STEP 4: WONDER
• Each participant turns over their index card and writes four speculations or
question-statements based on the observations in Round 1.
• These are possible explanations of the observations, not problem solving
• “I wonder why……..”
• 5 minutes
STEP 5: ROUND 2
• Identify a scribe
• Each participant reads aloud one new speculation that has not been
shared.
• No discussions
• 10 minutes
STEP 6:
• Discussion over what has been shared and possible causes and connections
to classroom instruction
• Note additional data that is / may be needed
• 15 minutes
