Define Multimedia
 Multimedia
contains multiple elements
such as text, image, audio and videos
used in a single platform.
 Static Elements – Text and image
 Dynamic Elements – Audio, Video
,Animation
Components of Multimedia
 Static
Elements : They are fixed and non
movable but shares information to the
other.
 Dynamic Elements : They are changeable
and motional, and shares a range of
information
Text Elements
 Two


types
Static Text : In static text the words
will either
give information or support an
image or
an video .
Hyper Text :the text and the links
between the nodes, which defines
the paths the user need to follow
for the text access in nonsequential ways.
Images
 Raster
Images : Simple Matrix of tiny dots
called pixels, Merged to form a bitmap
images or raster images. E.g.: 1bit = 2
colors
 Vector Images : Drawing Elements ,Such
as rectangle, circle and square.


Uses compression techniques to reduce the
size of images and speed up transfer.
GIF, TIFF and JPEG
Animation



Two Dimensional : X & Y axis
Three Dimensional : X,Y & Z axis
Purely focus on live image.



16 frames – Smoothness
25 frames – Natural Looking
Animation Two Types :
Path Animation : Moving object with constant
background E.g. : Cartoon Character or Games
 Frame Animation : Simultaneous Moving of
object and background changes drastically .
E.g. : Movies

Sound


Written Text replaced with audible or
hearable transfer of information, with music
and with added special effect.
Decibels is the measurement of volume, the
pressure level of sound.

MIDI (Musical Instrumental Digital Identifier)


Tools for synthesizing the sound.
Digital Audio
A sample of sound is taken and stored every n
fraction of a second in form of bit and bytes.
 Quality – Sampling Rate -bit depth, resolution
and sample size.

th
Video
 The
display of recorded events or scene
Two Types : Analog ,Digital
Analog Video : the video data’s are stored in
any non-computer media like video tape,
laserdisc, film.

 Composite
and Component Analogue Video
: brightness, color, and synchronization
combined into one signal.
 color blending, low clarity and high
generational loss, Betamax and VHS.
File Formats for
Multimedia
 Text


Formats
RTF(Rich Text
Format),1987,Microsoft,Document
Interchange
Plain Text : Opened , read and edited by
most editors.
 Notepad(Windows)
,Gedit & Nano(Unix and
Linux)
 conveying an e-mail.
Image Formats
 TIFF
(Tagged Image File Format) high
quality output, image compression and
Comfortable moving large files.
 BMP (Bitmap) quite large and
uncompressed, high quality occupies
large size.
 DIB (Device Independent Bitmap) similar
to BMP, allows the files to be displayed on
a variety of devices
Image Formats


GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) compressed image
format, best suitable for graphics that uses only limited
colors, online color photos - 13-bit Color
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) maximum image
compression.
Lossy compression technique - loses some of the data required
for the image reconstruction.
 works good with photographs, naturalistic artwork
TGA (Tagra)



first popular format for high resolution images, Most of the
video-capture boards
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) less loss, portable and
well compressed storage. works good with online viewing
applications like worldwide web
Digital Audio File Formats




WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) most popular
audio file format in windows for storing
uncompressed sound files, can also be converted
to other file formats.
MP3 (MPEG Layer-3 Format) MPEG Layer-3 format
for storing and downloading music, one-tenth the
size of an equivalent WAV file.
OGG A free, open source container format, better
streaming and evolving at high end quality digital
multimedia.
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) standard
audio file format used by Apple, Like wav format.
Digital Audio File Formats
 WMA
(Windows Media Audio) windows
media audio format owned by Microsoft
and designed with Digital Right
Management (DRM) abilities for copyright
protection.
 RA (Real Audio Format) designed for
streaming audio over the Internet, usually
stored as a computer file in computer’s
hard drive or CD/DVD.
Digital Video File Formats


AVI (Audio/Video Interleave) sound and picture
elements are stored in alternate interleaved.
MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) generating
digital video and audio compression under the
International Standards Organization(ISO) By group
of people.





MPEG-1 - Video CD and MP3 based
MPEG-2 - Digital Television set top boxes and DVD
MPEG-4 – Multimedia and Mobile Web
MPEG-7 - search of audio and visual content
