Environmental Brochure Project Project Overview In class we have learned about some of the ways humans have negatively impacted their environment. Your task in this project is to select and research an example of man’s negative impact on his/her environment. Once your research is complete, you will create an informational brochure that defines an environmental issue and its causes, describes its negative effects, suggests possible solutions, and lists the sources you used for your research. Although you will be given work time in the computer lab and/or library, you probably won’t have enough time to satisfactorily complete this project during class. In other words, this project will likely require you to do some work outside of class. Plan accordingly, and don’t wait until the night before it’s due to start finish this project. Also, use the time that you are given in class productively. Note that it is not a requirement that this brochure be created on a computer. Project Steps 1. Choose an environmental issue. Your choices include: -water pollution -global warming -air pollution -acid rain -deforestation -invasive species 2. Research the issue. Check out the websites that are accessible from my (Mr. Grams) school webpage. Remember to keep track of the sources you use because you will need to identify these in your brochure and on your note cards. You must use at least two sources of information for your project. I don’t have any specific requirements as to what kind of sources they are as long as they are trustworthy. Finally, be on the lookout for graphics and/or pictures that you may want to use in your brochure. Save these on your X-drive or print them out if you are planning on creating your brochure by hand. Due date: 3. Turn in your research (note cards) You must keep your research notes on the note cards that I give you. Do not turn in printed material from the Internet. Do not copy anything exactly as it is written. The information on your note cards should be in your words unless you plan on quoting and citing your source in your brochure. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Due date: 4. Create your brochure Your brochure should follow the design guidelines specified on the next page. Remember that there should be one picture or illustration on each page and your brochure (if done on the computer) should be printed in color. Brochure Format You will create a tri-fold brochure similar to the ones shown in class. The tri-fold design is easily divided into 6 sections. Each section’s contents are briefly described below. Front cover Title & picture (Your picture should be easy to see, interesting, and relate your subject matter.) Section 2 “Overview” (In this section you will introduce your topic by defining what it is and giving some interesting fact that would likely encourage people to continue reading the rest of your brochure. As you write this section, remember that you already have a separate section for your “Effects.”) Section 3 “Causes” Section 4 “Effects” (Globally and/or locally…be specific) Section 5 “Things You Can Do” (Be specific and try to focus on things we can do as individuals, not what the government or companies can do.) Section 6 “Sources” (At a minimum, you must include the web site’s address and the organization that created it.) Include your name at the bottom of this page. Front side Section 4 Effects Section 2 Overview Section 2 Overview Section 6 “Works Cited” Front Cover Back side Front Cover Section 3 Causes Section 4 Effects Section 5 “Things you can do” Brochure Rubric A Spelling, grammar, writing conventions There are no run-on sentences, sentence fragments, or awkward sections. There are no spelling or grammatical errors. Workmanship Handwriting is very neat and organized, lines and artwork and/or pictures are parallel, hand-drawn artwork is bright, colorful, and easily readable. Creativity The brochure layout, artwork, titles, text demonstrate a creative flare. Content All 6 sections are completed in the proper format. Each contains the proper heading and a supporting picture or illustration. There should be one picture or illustration on each page except for the “Works Cited” page. The text in each section relates specifically to the proper topic. The information included in the brochure reveals a broad understanding of the environmental issue and accurate research. The completed brochure has a high educational value to those unfamiliar with the issue. B Spelling, grammar, writing conventions There might be a couple of spelling or grammatical errors, perhaps there might even be a run-on sentence or sentence fragment. Whatever errors are made won’t be numerous and definitely won’t interfere with the reader’s ability to understand what is being said. Workmanship Handwriting is very neat and organized, lines and artwork and/or pictures are parallel, hand-drawn artwork is bright, colorful, and easily readable. Creativity While the brochure might not be particularly creative, it is well organized and shows attention to detail. Content All 6 sections are completed in the proper format. Each contains the proper heading and a supporting picture or illustration. The text in each section relates specifically to the proper topic. The information included in the brochure reveals at least a basic understanding of the environmental issue and accurate research. C Spelling, grammar, writing conventions There might be a few of spelling or grammatical errors. Perhaps there might even be a run-on sentence or sentence fragment. Whatever errors are made won’t be numerous and generally don’t interfere with the reader’s ability to understand what is being said. Workmanship Although the brochure is readable and shows an attempt at organization, workmanship is lacking. Perhaps handwritten sections aren’t as neat as they could be, pictures or illustrations might be poorly pasted into the brochure so that they appear crooked, or computer formatting problems detract from the overall appearance of the finished product. Creativity The brochure shows little creativity. Content All 6 sections are completed in the proper format. Each contains the proper heading and a supporting picture or illustration. The text in each section relates specifically to the proper topic. The information included in the brochure generally reveals an understanding of the environmental issue and accurate research. D Spelling, grammar, writing conventions There are numerous spelling and/or grammatical errors. Run-on sentences and/or sentence fragments interfere, at least somewhat, with the reader’s ability to understand what has been written. Workmanship Overall, the brochure appears to be of poor quality or hastily completed. Handwritten parts aren’t all that neat and pictures, illustrations, or type written text appears to be poorly organized. Content There appears to be some confusion over what each section should contain. Text doesn’t always appear to relate to the headings. The student generally hasn’t demonstrated knowledge of an environmental issue and/or the information presented in the brochure is somehow inaccurate. F The Brochure is incomplete or late.
