Subject and Object questions, word order in questions, questions
with who and what.
When what, who, which or whose is the subject or part of the subject, we do not
use the auxiliary. We use the word order subject + verb:
What fell off the wall? Which horse won?
Who bought this? Whose phone rang?
Who owns this bag?
Who is the subject of the sentence and this bag is the object. We
use no auxiliary verb.

Who is the subject of the sentence and an ice-cream is the
object. We use no auxiliary verb.
Which door opened?
Which is the subject of the sentence and door is the object. We
use no auxiliary verb.
Subject and object questions
En ingles existen dos tipos diferentes de preguntas utilizando question
words:
OBJECT QUESTIONS
Cuando queremos saber información sobre cómo, cuándo, dónde, por
qué..., el sujeto realiza una acción.
SUBJECT QUESTIONS
Cuando queremos saber quién realiza la acción.
Where does Mary work? In a bank.
¿Dónde trabaja Mary? En un banco.
Who works in a bank? Mary.
¿Quién trabaja en un banco? Mary.
2. La estructura de las object questions
Las object questions son las preguntas más comunes en inglés y las que
hemos estado trabajando en temas anteriores. Estas se utilizan para
saber dónde, cuándo, por qué... (where, when, why…) el sujeto realiza
cierta acción, es decir, formulamos preguntas sobre los complementos de
una oración.
Este tipo de preguntas sigue la estructura siguiente:
Question word + verbo auxiliar + sujeto + verbo principal +
(complementos) ?
Podemos formular dos object questions:
What did Jeremy buy in Ireland?
QW + verbo auxiliar + sujeto + verbo principal + complemento circunstancial
de lugar?
- What did Jeremy buy in Ireland?
- ¿Qué compró Jeremy en Irlanda?
- He bought a nice mug.
- Compró una bonita taza.
Where did Jeremy buy this nice mug?
QW + verbo auxiliar + sujeto + verbo principal + complemento directo
- Where did Jeremy buy this nice mug?
- ¿Dónde compró Jeremy esta bonita taza?
- In Ireland.
- En Irlanda.
El verbo auxiliar dependerá del tiempo verbal utilizado. En este caso
es did porque el verbo de la frase Jeremy bought a nice mug in Ireland está
en pasado simple.
La estructura de las subject questions en inglés
Las subject questions se utilizan para saber quién o qué realiza la acción,
es decir, formulamos preguntas sobre el sujeto de una oración.
Este tipo de preguntas siguen la estructura siguiente:
Question word + verbo principal + (complementos) ?
Tomaremos de referencia la misma frase anterior:
En este caso solo podemos formular una subject question:
Who bought this nice mug in Ireland?
Question word + verbo principal + complemento directo + complemento
circunstancial de lugar?
- Who bought this nice mug in Ireland?
- ¿Quién compró esta bonita taza en Irlanda?
- Jeremy.
- Jeremy.
Si quisiéramos utilizar la estructura habitual (object question), veríamos que
no tiene sentido:
Who did Jeremy buy this nice mug in Ireland?
QW + verbo auxiliar + sujeto + verbo principal + complemento directo +
complemento circunstancial de lugar?
Como podemos observar, este tipo de preguntas seguiría la misma
estructura que utilizamos en español.
Observaciones sobre las subject questions


Las QW que se utilizan con las subject questions son las siguientes:

En el caso de how many, whose y which, podemos poner un nombre entre la question
word y el verbo si es necesario.

Aunque en las object questions siempre ponemos el verbo auxiliar, en
las subject questions en present simple y past simple, el auxiliar se
omite (no se pone do / does / did).
