Weathering Experiment Define the following terms: Physical weathering: _________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ Chemical weathering: _________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ Aim: To observe physical and chemical weathering. Risk Assessment: Hazard Risk Precaution Procedure: 1. Fill up a 250mL beaker with 150mL water. 2. Pick up a piece of sandstone/granite using crucible tongs and hold it over a Bunsen burner for 1 minute. 3. Place the piece of sandstone/granite into the water. 4. Record your observations. 5. Place a piece of limestone/marble into a beaker. 6. Pour 10mL of hydrochloric acid (using a measuring cylinder) on top of the limestone/marble. 7. Record your observations. Results: Write down your observations – note down what the stone looks like before AND after the weathering. Type of Rock Observations Questions: 1. Which one of the experiments you just did is an example of physical weathering? ___________________________________________________________________ 2. Which one of the experiments you just did is an example of chemical weathering? ___________________________________________________________________
