What is a “competency”? A Competency may be defined as the ability of a student / worker to accomplish tasks adequately, to find solutions and to realize them in real life situations. Principles -language should be connected to a social context rather than being taught in isolation. -Active learning and Long-term retention. -Competency-based assessment. -students learn to use the language in authentic situations likely to be encountered outside the classroom. -Students must demonstrate that they can accomplish specific tasks that are likely to be encountered in the real-world using the target-language. -Classes must be student-centred with a focus on what students can do. The activities in the CBT classroom must be oriented toward the ability to successfully complete a realworld task. Teacher/learner -Create addictive learning experiences. -Provide targeted support for students. roles Students’ role: -Students take an active part in their own learning -Their role is to integrate, produce, and extend knowledge. -They learn to think critically and to adapt and transfer knowledge across a variety of settings. -learning styles may not fit the preferred approach and style of many students -it requires students to be self-disciplined, self-motivated and able to plan and work independently, which Limitations might not be possible for all students. - it focuses on some skills and neglects others.
