When this is the case, each point of similarity or difference will be discussed in a different paragraph following the same order as they are stated in the thesis statement. When you are starting a body paragraph for a comparison / contrast essay, the first and most important thing to do is to mention your topic and supporting point (similarity / difference) in your topic sentence. 9 Topic Sentence The first sentence of each body paragraph is called the TOPIC SENTENCE. This sentence serves as an introduction to the paragraph and establishes its purpose. LOOK AT THESE EXAMPLES 1. The Caribe Hilton Hotel is located in a much better place than its competitor, the Ritz Carlton. 2. The Caribe Hilton offers better price rates at all times. 3. You will receive a far better service at the Caribe Hilton Hotel than at the Ritz Carlton. 10 ADDING SUPPORT for each body paragraph 11 Adding Support After writing topic sentences, we can start adding support to our body paragraphs. Remember that you can provide support with examples, explanations, statistics, facts, etc. Follow your outline when you are writing your body paragraphs. 12 Concluding Paragraphs 13 Concluding Paragraphs for Comparison / Contrast Essays A concluding paragraph is your chance to remind the reader of your thesis. Also, the conclusion brings the paper to a natural and graceful end, sometimes leaving the reader with a final thought on the subject. You should start your concluding paragraph with a transitional signal for a concluding paragraph. You should also avoid introducing a new idea in conclusions. 14
