The 7Es Model of Instruction This model emphasizes the “transfer of learning” and the importance of eliciting prior understanding 7E’s of the Learning Cycle Developed by Arthur Eisenkraft Taken from The Science Teacher – 2003; The National association of Science Teachers The Elicit Phase As the teacher, you Students construct need to know what knowledge from knowledge existing students have…. knowledge important for the Identify and clear Transfer of up any Learning misconceptions Formative Assessment The Elicit Phase Introduce topic/task Activate prior learning • Read a paragraph Set the stage for your transition into the Engage phase • Give them a diagram/picture Key: What Can You Do ? • Show a video clip • present them with a problem • Class demonstration Teacher Questioning The Engage Phase This is where you need to capture the students’ attention You need to give students something to think about Try to connect the concepts to their everyday lives .. Why do they need to study/know this? This is Your “hook” The Engage Phase What do you think about this? What do you want to know? What do you know? What would you like to do? The Explore Phase Gives students a chance to investigate the topic by: Observing Analyzing Hypothesizing Constructing Organizing Accomplished through: Teacher Demonstrations Teacher questioning Reading activities Internet searches The Explain Phase This is your traditional teaching phase. Concepts and new terminology are presented Teacher assesses this phase of learning usually through teacher questioning or a scaffolding activity The Elaborate Phase This is where students apply their new knowledge The knowledge must be extended into new situations Accomplished through: Compare and contrast activities Hypothetical situations – not identical This is Distance Transfer of Learning The Evaluate Phase Includes both Formative and Summative Assessment. Formative Assessments should be used all phase of the cycle Evaluations should include questions relating to the aspects learned through the process. Information gathered from the elaborate and extend phases should be used as part of the evaluation phase … it is an assessment! The Extend Phase Is a continuation of the Elaborate phase … applying knowledge to new and different situations In the Classroom, this is often given as “extra credit” to challenge your “gifted students” All students should be challenged Is This Model for You?
