1) List the 8 parts of speech.
2) Comment on the function of each part of speech.
3) Identify the parts of speech of underlined words in sentences.
ENGAGEMENT
 Play a game of HANGMAN for students to uncover the topic of the day. After all the letters have
been revealed, explain that the lesson will be focused on parts of speech. Invite students to share the
different parts of speech they have been exposed to and list their responses on the board.
EXPLORATION
 Invite students to comment on the function of each part of speech. After students have explained the
parts of speech, ask students to suggest the sample sentences and allow them to identify each word’s
part of speech.
EXPLANATION
 Introduce the term “article” to students and explain what articles are and their purpose with use of
“a”, “an” and “the” in sample sentences. Highlight how each article functions differently.
ELABORATION
 Work collaboratively with students to analyze sample sentences in which a word;’s part of speech
may change depending on the sentence in which it is placed.
