Spelling lists How to use the Spelling lists These spelling lists are a supplement to the Spelling spreads at the back of the Learner’s Book. They are a teacher resource and can be used at your discretion. The 18 lists, each with 15 words per list, provide examples of words following particular letter patterns or spelling rules. They are not organised as lists to be learned per week; rather they are for you to draw on for reference or to prepare as lists for display in the classroom, for example, although groups of spelling words may be given as a learning / homework task if this fits in with your school’s philosophy of teaching spelling. Drill is just one element of learning to spell and progress cannot be measured according to whether a prescribed set of words can be written out correctly in a test, out of context. Notes for a suggested spelling session are provided on page 7. 1 our behaviour colour flavour glamour harbour honour hour humour journal journey labour neighbour odour rumour vapour 3 unstressed admiral battery definite desperate family favourite general history memory parliament prisoner secondary several vacuum Wednesday 5 af, aff affair affect affection affectionate affix affliction affluent afford afloat afraid afresh after aftercare afternoon afterwards 7 contractions I’m (I am) he’s (he is) that’s (that is) I’ll (I will) she’ll (she will) we’ll (we will) isn’t (is not) aren’t (are not) won’t (will not) shan’t (shall not) can’t (cannot) shouldn’t (should not) wouldn’t (would not) doesn’t (does not) o’clock (of the clock) 2 ance, ence appearance appliance audience balance circumference circumstance distance entrance essence experience nuisance sentence sequence silence substance 4 ap, app apartment apex apology apparel appeal appear appetite applaud apple applied appoint approach apricot apron aptitude 6 al, all alert algebra alien alive allergic allergy alliance allowed almond alone along aloud alpine also alternate 8 ge/dge average bridge fudge gadget grudge heritage judge knowledge lodge message nudge ridge rummage village wedge Cambridge Primary English Stage 6 Teacher’s Resource © Cambridge University Press 2015 Spelling lists 9 unusual plurals crisis/crises oasis/oases die/dice medium/media vertex/vertices index/indices curriculum/curricula phenomenon/phenomena radius/radii syllabus/syllabi octopus/octopi scissors trousers spectacles binoculars 10 k sound accomplish ache acknowledge broccoli cartoon cauliflower character chemist chorus courtesy cracker cushion melancholy second stomach 11 sh sound brochure charlatan chef cliché machine mention mushroom nation parachute ration shoulder shuffle sugar tissue vicious 12 ei not after c beige counterfeit eight eighteen eighth either feign foreign forfeit heir heirloom neigh neither vein weight 13 cian/ch beautician dietician electrician magician mathematician paediatrician physician politician approachable champion chief chilli chimney chisel churlish Cambridge Primary English Stage 6 Teacher’s Resource © Cambridge University Press 2015 14 tion action caution celebration conservation conversation description direction examination exhibition fraction information multiplication precaution prediction quotation 15 sion collision conclusion confusion decision division erosion explosion extension inclusion invasion occasion persuasion revision supervision version 16 ssion admission aggression discussion expression impression mission passion percussion permission possession procession profession progression session succession 17 suffixes analogy apprenticeship archaeology biology brotherhood championship childhood cosmology friendship membership motherhood neighbourhood ownership partnership zoology 18 ic angelic athletic atomic electric energetic epidemic gigantic heroic historic mechanic metallic organic poetic specific volcanic Spelling lists
