ELEMENTS OF DANCE
POSTURE – the changing of perception of the body, there is often a wide discrepancy between what feels right
and what looks right. Dancers work their entire dance live on their posture.
GESTURE – it involves using the body as an expressive instrument to communicate feelings and idea.
MOVING IN SPACE – you need to be aware of the space around you as a cat. You must move with care and
awareness, gauging the space. Space is not just empty air but a tangible element that you move through.
BREATHING – is a crucial to dance, not only does it bring oxygen to the body, but it also gives your moments’
fluency and harmony.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
ACCENTED BEAT – the facts or idea show the beat in music which has more emphasis than the others, usually
to first beat of the measure.
ALIGNMENT – it is the direction of the feet in relation to the line of dance and its varied room-oriented
description.
AMALGAMATION – variation related to the combining individual dance figure into predetermined dance
sequence.
BREAK – it is couples release hands.
CENTERING – maintains the sense of the body axis that holds it together as one move.
CLOSED POSITION – it is partners facing with the man’s right interlocked and lady’s left on the man’s
shoulder.
FOLLOWING – it is to respond to the lead.
FREE HAND – it is the hand not placed anywhere or not doing or holding anything.
GRAVITY – force that holds all things to the Earth.
LEADING – refers to the male reference to the maneuvering of the couple about the dance floor with the use of
increasing and decreasing of pressure upon the female’s hand and back.
LINE OF DANCE – the direction of dance in which smooth dances are led about the dance floor.
LINK ELBOW – it is to hook left or right elbow with partner or any dancer.
SYNCOPATION – moving of the normal accent of the music to another place for the purpose of exaggerating
that beat or movement.
