Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. It is a very cold planet and is known as the
'ice giant', along with Neptune. The bluish-green atmosphere that surrounds Uranus is
made up of methane, hydrogen, and helium.
Uranus has rings made up of large rocks and black dust particles. The rings were
discovered on March 10, 1977. It also has 27 known moons. The five main ones are
Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon.
Uranus is the only planet in the solar system that spins on its side.
Uranus was first discovered in 1781 by a man called William Herschel. It was also the first
planet to be discovered with a telescope.
It takes Uranus 84 Earth years to orbit the sun. The only visit made to Uranus was in 1986
by the Voyager 2 spacecraft.
In Greek mythology, Uranus was god of the heavens and was also the father of Cronus
(Saturn).
