Phonics Assessment for K-3 Readers www.thisreadingmama.com Finding out what your child or student knows about phonics is quick and simple with this phonics assessment! Specific directions are on page two (2) of this download. Two Extra Notes: I have found that it works best if you wait 3-4 weeks in between assessing the student on the same word list. This keeps the assessment fresh and more accurate. This assessment is only a snap-shot of the student’s abilities. Observation of spelling and reading skills also needs to be factored in to what the child knows or does not know about phonics.. Directions for Phonics Assessment at eg in op um *Ahead of time, print and cut out each rime (-at, -eg, -in, op, and –um). *Give the rimes to the student, one at a time. He manipulates the rimes to make real and silly words by placing the rimes to the right side of each onset (beginning letter). The student page is p. 3 of this download. *The student should read each word they make. Say: “Place the word ending beside each beginning letter to make a real or silly word. Read each word that you make. Please remember that some words will not be real words. Do not try to make them sound like real words. Only read what you see.” *** For all other student pages, use a blank cover sheet to reveal only the line of words that the student needs to read, as seen below. Say: “Do your best to read each word you see in this row. I cannot tell you the word or give you any hints. Just do your best.” If a child gets 100% or only misses one in a row, write the date completed in that phonics feature’s box. If a child misses two or more words in a row, stop the test. cover sheet www.thisreadingmama.com Phonics Assessment 1.
