George Brown Hello my name is George Brown; I was born in Alloa Scotland on the 29 of November in the year of 1818. I was raised by my family of four brothers, each of which was younger than me, and my parents in Edinburgh the capital of Scotland. I moved with my father to New York in the year of 1837. In New York, my father and I opened a dry goods shop in which I was his only assistant. The shop helped pay the bills in America and Scotland. In six years, I moved again (with my father) but this time I went to Toronto where I started my very own news paper company called The Banner, and just a year later I started a new news paper company called the Toronto Globe. The main reason that I began the Globe was to support the idea of a responsible government. A responsible government consists of “a government that embodies the principle of parliamentary accountability” (en.m.wikipedia.org PS: search what’s a responsible government). During the year of 1848 “I assisted the reformers to a key victory” (the reformers victory of 1848, thecanadianencyclopedia.ca). The victory had made the banner a force to be reckoned with. In 1851, Catholics were asking for the state to pay for independent schools. I decided to use this issue to my advantage and join the assembly. Once there, “I was seated as an independent Reformer” (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca under political career). I was strongly against the idea of the church having ties with the state, my opinion was very popular in upper Canada because many “Anglo Protestant” (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca) people lived there at the time. The French despised my opinion because they were mainly catholic, so to over come this issue I though there was a much greater population in upper Canada than in lower Canada so what if we could hand out seats by representation by population which meant that the person with the greater population gets more seats, this would work in our favour because we had a greater population. Then in 1854 some chairmen decided that we want to be dumb and “cause sectional strains this would lead to the collapse of the reformers (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca second paragraph under political career)”. As I set out to fix what those morons accomplished and (PS pun reform the reformers;) I started to reassemble the Reform Party. In the January of 1857 a way better Reform Party I say this because this new Reform Party had found out that what I was saying about representation by population could work wonders for us but I am getting side tracked apologies for that any way this new Party came thru when it mattered the most the Upper Canada elections of 1857. During the august of 1858 Antoine Aime Dorion the me of Lower Canada and I the great George Brown decided that it would be in our best of interest to start a government, you see his half of the government were very awful and they were unfair so we came together and decided that we should just drop this awful government and return to what we were doing before, so the government fell and I haven’t thought abought it since. “The leader of Upper Canada wanted a Reform convention to discuss sectional division (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca last paragraph towards the beginning)”. During this convention, which took place in Toronto, my plan was not very popular and in 1861 I was sick and I lost which by the way completely sucked because now I was sick and I lost and I don’t like losing and I don’t like losing either so I decided to leave so I could clear my conscience. In 1862 I went to Britain where I met my wife to be Anne Nelson the daughter of a publisher. I returned to politics (in 1863) with a bang as a member of South Oxford. Once there I intended to reach a reform of the union. “During 1864 I chaired an all-party parliamentary committee on that subject (thecanadianencyclopedia.ca confederation first paragraph towards the top)”. My Party decided to vote for the federal principle so that way we would have the ability to overcome the sectionalism which had produced the political deadlock. Also on that same day the conservatives broke down and I offered to start a new government but this offer ended up making my life a living nightmare because I now had to work with my rivals by doing this I “would form a coalition which would seek a federal union of all British provinces (thecanadianencyopidia.ca confederation first paragraph towards the end).” In 1865 I resigned because they basically did not want me to stay. I was still a strong supporter of confederation and ran for the first federal elections of 1867. I was defeated and I left politics and went home to my wife and three kids. How I Died It was a normal day in the year 1880 at The Globe when a former Globe employee walked right thru the door and shot me in the leg, the wound look like nothing and I left it untreated. Two weeks later I died. The End Submitted to: Miss.Lacorte Submitted by: Ricardo Rodriguez
