Hill Georgia State University Concert Review II McKenzie Hill Music, Society, and Culture Fall 2019 Professor Maxwell-Clements 1 Hill 2 Concert Essay On November 5, 2019 I attended Georgia State University’s School of Music recital. The recital was held at the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall at 7:30pm. The pieces were performed by students, and there was no conductor during the recital. Eight pieces were performed in total. The first piece, “Duet for Two Viola” by composer Carl Stamitz, was performed by Sabrina Viner and Emmanuel Hill, both playing violas. It was mid-paced paced piece with very luxurious tones. It is a long selection, lasting over 12 minutes. The piece reminded me of a fancy dinner in a castle. Carl Stamitz was a German composer of the last generation of Mannheim symphonists. The next piece performed was “Passacaglia” by composer Johan Halvorsen. The piece was performed by Cameron Richardson, playing the violin, and Patrick Tabeek who played the viola. This was my favorite piece out of the entire concert. The song was extremely fast paced, dark and sorrowful. I felt like it really connected with me. “Passacaglia” originated from George Fredric Handel’s “Suite in G minor” which was originally written for the harpsichord. “String Quintet in G minor Op.17” by Romantic composer George Onslow, was the third piece performed. It is a faster paced piece. It sounded eerie in some parts but happier in others. It reminds of me of the show Max & Ruby, that I used to watch as a kid. “String Quintet in G minor Op.17” was the composition that gained Onslow his fame. The fourth selection performed was “String Quintet in C minor op.104” by legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven. This piece is very dramatic, it reminds me of a climax during a movie. It has a somber melody, not too happy, not too sad. Beethoven is arguably the best classical composer of all time. Hill 3 “String Quartet in F Major Op.8” by German composer Carl Friedrich Abel, was the fifth selection performed. I liked this piece a lot, because of it reminds me of a hot sunny day. The piece was very fast paced, and it has a very happy “first day of summer” vibe to it. Abel was one of the most popular Classical era composers, along with his friends Johann Christian Bach and Mozart. The next selection, “String Quartet no.4 in C minor” by Ludwig van Beethoven, was the sixth piece performed. This piece was probably the fastest classical composition I’ve ever heard. The piece reminded of a worker bee because of its busy melody. The seventh selection performed was “Trio élégiaque no.1 in G minor” by composer Sergio Rachmaninov. This piece was very serious and dark, with a moderate pace. I liked this piece a lot because it reminded me of a thriller movie, or someone running through the woods. This was also the longest selection played, lasting a little over 15 minutes. The last piece performed was “Piano Trio no.1 in D minor” by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. It was a slower paced piece with very sad undertones. This piece reminded me a lot of The Corpse Bride. Mendelssohn was not only a composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the concert. It was interesting to see students from my school performing classical music in comparison to the first concert that I saw for this class was the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I liked the music more at this concert more than the other because it connected with me. Hill 4
