Measures of Central Tendency Notes The mean of a data set is the average. To find the mean, add up all of the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value of the data set. To find the median, put the numbers in order from smallest to largest. Cross off numbers on either side until you find the number in the middle. The mode is the data item that occurs the most times. The range of a data describes how spread out the data is. To find the range, find the difference (subtract) the largest and smallest data values.
