Double Entry Journal #1

1. Adichie, C. (29 July 2014). We Should All Be Feminists. Vintage; Reprint edition.

Objective Summary and High points

This textbook talks about the gender inequality that exists today. The author describes the frustrating position women have in a “man’s world”. Gender is an integral part of our lives and the purpose of her textbook is to acknowledge feminism in a way that will not condemn women but instead support them. She desires to bring light to this continuous gender disparity and begin by changing the way we think to make a better world.

2. Full summary of reading (5-6 sentences someone who hadn’t read the reading could understand).

Chimamanda Adichie is a leading women’s advocate who talks about her

Nigerian background and the many experiences she has faced living in patriarchal society. Women continue to experience inequality all around the world; they are paid less, are perceived as weak and have to conform to society’s standards of being perfect. Supporting women’s rights has become a challenge, as the term feminism is looked down on.

Her progress as a feminist has brought her critic from women of her country and around the world. She explains how normal is has become for women to be oppressed that deriving a new perspective is extremely difficult to achieve. Although not impossible, if we start the conversation and begin to acknowledge that there is a problem and we can do better to fix it.

Subjective Reflections

Reading this textbook furthers the perspective on feminism from a women’s viewpoint. Through her shared experiences she allows you to identify yourself with her and enjoy the conversation she poses on gender inequality. a) Your thoughts on the overall content of the reading.

This reading allowed me to actually think about the subject of gender inequality. We have been raised to not analyze gender roles and just accept them. The author made me identify with her own experiences and caused me to think of times that I myself have been unrecognized because of being a women. This reading is written in way that you can feel the sincere opinion of a women who looks to make a true and hopeful change in the world. b) How did it tie in with your experiences, beliefs, philosophy, and prior knowledge?

This text tied in with my experiences because just like the author I am a woman. I grew up in the US, where you are mentalized to think that we already experience equality and our thriving country doesn’t discriminate. As I got older I realized this is far from the truth, I am a STEM major and I have witnessed opportunities being passed on to my piers because they are men. I come from a Hispanic household and up to today I keep receiving comments by women that it doesn’t really matter if

I do well in school or what career I choose because when I get married I will probably be a stay at home mom supported by my husband. c) Have your ideas changed or been confirmed?

My beliefs have been confirmed. I have never seen myself as a feminist but I do acknowledge there is gender inequality.

From the reading I am more convinced that

3. 6-10 provoking points or quotes.

“Gender matters everywhere in the world.

And I would like today to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a dif f erent world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: We must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently.” (pg.

12)

“Then an academic, a Nigerian woman, told me that feminism was not our culture, that feminism was un-African, and I was only calling myself a feminist because I had been influenced by

Western books.” (pg.8)

“We say to girls: You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man. If you are the breadwinner in your relationship with a man, pretend that you are not, especially in public, otherwise you will emasculate him.” (pg.13)

“Gender is not an easy conversation to have. It makes people uncomfortable, sometimes even irritable. Both men and women are resistant to talk about gender, or are quick to dismiss the problems of gender. Because thinking of changing the status quo is always uncomfortable.”

(pg.16)

4.One or Two questions you have?

Do you believe feminism will be a term that is continued to use as time goes by? this is a global issue that has not been addressed as it should.

These are just prompts for reflection-

You needn’t answer each one. a) Do you agree or disagree with each point?

I agree with most of her points, the author is genuine and honest about her opinion of gender inequality. She also comes through with facts about how society has morphed gender ideas into our culture. b) Is there anything more you would like to know about the topic?

I would like to know more about gender differences in university and how these differences affect career choices. e) How did this change your understanding of this topic?

This reading allowed me to understand better the problem we have and not just mask it with the idea that our country has progressed because we are all free.

Instead this has opened my eyes to view how inequality has shaped my life to believe how women are living is

“normal”. a) Why is this question important to you?

I believe that as time goes by there should be a lower gap between men and women.

If this happens the word feminism will be used less and less because we have reached equality. b) What are the implications of this question?

We don’t know how long this might take.

It can be something very hard to achieve.

In addition, answer the following question: What is Adichie's definition of feminism and how does it differ or relate to Bell Hook's description in Module 1? You may include your answer below your

"double entry journal" (DEJ) chart.

Adichie definition differs because it believes feminism is the equality of women and men.

She defends how women have had less opportunity in all areas and achieving equality will change that.
