Friction Lab

Pre- Lab:

1.

What is Friction?

2.

What causes Friction?

3.

Name 3 types of Friction?

Object Height to START moving (cm) Height to keep speed CONSTANT as object slides (cm) book

Cart (wheels down)

Cart (wheels up)

Small mass

Large mass

Procedure:

1.

Obtain a book, a momentum cart, a large mass, and a small mass, Place an object on the end of the book. Place one of the objects on the end of the ramp.

2.

Raise the ramp until the object just begins to slide down the ramp.

3.

Measure the height from the table to the top of the ramp. Record the height in the data table.

4.

Raise the ramp and give the object a small “shove”, and observe if the object keeps moving at constant speed. If not, raise the ramp a little higher, and try again until the object DOES keep moving at constant speed.

5.

Record the minimum height of the ramp when an object that has an initial motion keeps moving at constant speed.

6.

Repeat steps above with the other objects

Analysis:

1.

Which item experienced the greatest fictional force? How do you know?

2.

Identify the force that prevents the objects to slide.

3.

What type of friction do the items have at the top of the ramp?

4.

What types of friction do the items have as they slide down the ramp?

5.

What happens to the motion of an object when the ramp is raised to the height in step 2 of the procedure and the object is allowed to keep moving with the ramp at that height?

6.

State an explanation as to why that would happen:
