PACKAGING PROCESSED FISH BY BOTTLING
(PFB)
GLASS
is one of the oldest
packaging materials for
many food products like
preserves, condiments,
beverages and juices.
The best qualities of glass.
1. Clear and glossy – one best way
to display or show-off products
2. Inert – does not affect taste of
food nor is affected by food
ingredients
3. Impermeable – to gases and
spoilage agents like
microorganisms
4. Reusable – can be re-washed,
refilled, recycled
5. Heat Resistant – withstands high
temp. in sterilization and filling
processes.
6. Strong – retains high internal
pressure and vacuum, breaks only by
tensile stress, not by compression
“GLASS IS VULNERABLE TO THERMAL
SHOCK”
Glass containers are now being
made “lightweight”. Being
“fragile”, they are coated or
shielded with shrink of foam
labels, thus, dangers from
broken glass are minimized.
• Glass protective properties are
dependent on integrity of its
closures or seal.
Microcracks or pinholes are
entry points of microorganisms
• Glass closures can either be
metal or plastic. For heatprocessed foods, metal caps are
widely used.
• Paper labels are normally used on
glass containers. But glass can also be
printed as in beer and softdrink
bottles. Plastic shrink labels like those
use in cheese spreads offer all around
printing panels.
• Capseals discourage consumers
from opening packs displayed on
store shelves.
Catsups, salad aids and
condiments are big users of capseals.
•
Before filling glass containers, check for
presence of glass splinters and dirt, and
glass defects. Surface defects greatly lower
glass strength.
•
Reused glass containers should be
thoroughly cleaned. All dirt must be
removed.
Sterilizing them is highly recommended
and this must be a product commitment to
consumers.
• Glass packs are usually shipped in
corrugated cartons. For transport or
shipment, glass should be rendered
immobile. Breakage rate can be kept
at low levels by using partitions, pads
and cushioning materials.
• Glass makers maintain “stock
lines” which are collection of available
bottle designs.
Stock lines – can be
made to look like your
own design in many
ways.
