Bridging Program for Building Capacities of
General Practitioners in Family Medicine in
Islamic Republic of Iran
Background on Iran: Basic data
• 80 million population : about 24000 FM specialist is needed
• Integrated system of Health services and medical education : MOHME
• 31 Provinces, 55 medical universities, 42 of the run at least one residency
program
• A complete Health Network System all over the country with more than
5000 Centers of Comprehensive Health Services (CCHS) and 21000
community health houses and health posts
Background on Iran: Family Medicine in Action
• Health Transformation Plan: GPs have been recruited as Family
Physicians
• MPH on FM ( in blended format) has been started by 20 universities
in 2009, 1200 GPs have been trained so far
• FM residency program was started since Feb. 2016 , in 8
universities(now 10 universities)
Objectives of the bridging programme
• Focus their(GPs) approaches to the patient and community on family
oriented health care
• Provide essential care and service according to the national health
protocols and guidelines
Course contents and duration
• A blended format including online, face-to-face live and hands on
experiences in Ambulatory care service (Centers of Comprehensive
Health Services: CCHS).
• It is intended to accommodate with the work schedule of the
practicing GPs.
• The program includes five main modules which designed according
to:

cover national guidelines in health system
the total duration of the program is 24 weeks

• MOOCS mode: thousands in the theoretical phase
