Aaron Sawyer Chung 1/26/2020 MHR 418 HW #1 What is Work? 1. Briefly discuss how work gets done in contemporary organizations is different from that in past organizations. - Traditionally work is routine and standardized with set hours, typically nine to five. With the increase of AI and automation those type of jobs are getting replaced with jobs that computers can’t do yet. These jobs include creative thinking, problem solving, understanding other people, etc. In contemporary organizations these jobs get work done much more efficiently because we have already automated many of the routine jobs away. For example, to have a person work a routine job wouldn’t be as valuable to the company because they could automate it. 2. Briefly discuss “why” how work gets done has shifted in contemporary organizations. - It’s very easy to measure if work is getting done if you are, for example, producing a tangible product. You can measure how many units produced and how many of them you sold and at the end of the day your profit. Automation has made this a lot more stable than it typically was so now organizations have to looks at different avenues of work such as creative thinking and using ideas and human interactions to grow their business. This explains the shift of how work gets done. Work gets done now if your able to generate innovative ideas and built meaningful relationships. It may be more difficult to measure but it is an investment contemporary organizations need to make.
