Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2.mp3
U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday Lyrics
Yeah
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes
And make it go away
How long
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long
Cause tonight, we can be as one
Tonight
Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
How long
How long must we sing this song
How long, how long
Cause tonight, we can be as one
Tonight, tonight
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
Oh, wipe your tears away
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Oh, wipe your blood shot eyes
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die
(Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Song Unit 1
1. Listen to the song, which expression repeated all along could be the title?
2. Read the following information about the context of the song and answer the
questions:
In Northern Ireland, until the 1990s, there was a conflict
between two communities: the Irish Protestants who
supported the British government and were proud to be
part of Britain, and the Irish Catholics, who wanted
independence from Britain and to be part of the Republic
of Ireland. It was not just a question of identity and
religion. The Irish Catholics were less numerous than the
Protestants and until the 1080s, there was a high rate of
unemployment and poverty among them, they had
difficulties to find good jobs or state jobs like policeman or
teacher. There was a wall in Belfast separating the living
areas of the two communities which did not mix. The
1980s were a period of troubles with a situation of civil war
and British troops were sent there. Both communities had
a paramilitary group. The most famous one was the IRA
(Irish Republican Army) defending the Catholic cause. The
group organised many terrorist acts in Northern Ireland
and Great Britain. In 1998, Northern Ireland signed an
agreement with the British government ending 30 years of
troubles and violence. But before that, there were some
unfortunate events which gave the title to this song. On
Sunday, 30th January 1972, about 20,000 civilians marched through the town of Derry in
Northern Ireland. They were protesting against the policy of the English government which
imprisoned suspected members of the IRA without a trial. While they were demonstrating,
the English army fired on unarmed marchers, killing fourteen people, some were shot in
the back. Those responsible for this massacre were never punished. The band U2 wrote
this song to talk about those times of hatred and violence.
a. Which communities were involved in the conflict and why?

b. What was there in the city of Belfast at that time?
___________________________________________________________________
c. How was the conflict ended?

d. Why were people protesting in Derry on 30th January 1972?
