LESSON OBJECTIVE • Revision of Ancient Rome content learned this term • Students will learn about Roman warfare and the life of a Roman soldier • Students will learn about death and funeral customs ROMAN WARFARE THE LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5e7cl19Ha0 ROMAN WARFARE • Military service was part of life for Roman citizens and initially only land owners were allowed to join • It was needed to first increase Rome’s territory and then defend it • Rome’s army became very strong • Later, the breakdown in order and self-discipline became one of the reasons the Western Empire eventually crumbled • Wealthy men owned horses and had armour and weapons, they formed the cavalry • Eventually, all men could join the army and there were thousands • The Roman army was hierarchical and disciplined ROMAN WARFARE • One military strategy that gave the Roman army an advantage over its enemies was siege warfare • Siege warfare involved surrounding an enemy city and starving those inside into submission • It often involved slaughtering the enemy after they surrendered • Sometimes built parallel cities around the cities so no food could be brought in • Equipment such as catapults were used to launch stones or rotten animals over the walls DEATH AND FUNERAL CUSTOMS • Let’s read page 312 and 313 together • QUESTIONS?
