Civil War Project Guidelines Name: ___________________________

Civil War Project

As we continue our study of the Civil War, each of you will be completing a project consisting of researching generals, battles, and writing personal responses to several major battles. Each of you will be assigned to be either a Union soldier or a Confederate soldier. For the remainder of this chapter you will be concentrating your study on the region you are assigned to. Due dates for each section will be specified in class.

Whichever country you are assigned to will be the country that you are conducting your research with. The research on generals and battles will be conducted in pairs, but the personal responses will be written individually. This packet contains the research aids for the generals and a packet will be handed out at a later date containing the aids for researching key battles in the war. More detailed instructions are provided below for each section of the project.

Generals

Research the generals listed on the accompanying page using the internet, your textbook, or encyclopedias. Fill out the answers to prompts provided. Once you have filled out the necessary information, complete a poster on the commanding general of your country.

These two generals are listed below. Your poster will be presented to the class in order to inform your classmates about the man that will lead your country to the expected victory.

Your poster must include a picture of your general, his name in large letters, the flag of your country, and any other information you believe is necessary for you classmates to gain an understanding about the kind of man the general was and the importance he held for his country. Such additional information could include major battles he won, the significance of battles he won, characteristics that made him a good leader, creative tactics he used, nicknames he was given, etc.

Battles

A list of battles is provided along with research prompts for each side. Using the internet, your textbook, encyclopedias, or other sources fill in the required information for each battle. These battles are specific to your country and will cover only the actions taken by your country in battle. As we discuss the battles in class, each side will be required to explain their actions in a particular battle and the effects of those outcomes.

Personal Response

After 8 of the key battles we discuss in class, you will be required to write a letter home to a loved one explaining your actions in the battle and your personal reaction to what happened and what you were a witness to. These letters will be compiled together at the end of the chapter and turned in as a packet.

For each of the battles, answer the questions that are provided for your country as well as the general information, such as the dates, casualties, winner, and significance. For each additional commander that is listed, explain some of his significance contributions to that particular battle. Do not try and fill in an biography of information for each additional commander in each battle. If the additional commanders box is left blank, find two significant commanders from your side, fill in their names and explain their important contributions. As you fill in the summaries of your country’s movements in each battle make sure that you are giving a general description. Do not get bogged down in the details or it will become much too confusing. ** Do not fill in the information for your enemy because we will go over that information in class.

Personal Response

After each of the 8 key battles we discuss in class, you will be required to write a letter home to a loved one explaining your actions in the battle and your personal reaction to what happened and what you were a witness to. These letters will be compiled together at the end of the chapter and turned in as a packet.

Your first letter will be the one you write when you leave home for the war. Create a character for both yourself and your loved one. Give a name to your loved one, explain your relationship to them, and explain your feelings about going away to war. Remember to allow them to reflect the general opinion of most of the soldiers in your country at the beginning of the war. Each of your following letters will be written after a key battle that we study in class, ending with a final letter after the South surrenders. Be creative with these letters. Tell stories that happen to you in battle, explain what division you’re in, who your leaders are, and some friends you might have. Allow these letters to be as real as they can, telling the stories of soldiers away at war.

Remember that each letter should begin with a greeting to whomever you are writing, include the date that you are writing, and end with a closing and your name. Also, each letter should make it obvious as to what battle you are writing about. This can either be from the date, which would be a few days after the battle or by describing specific events from the battle.
