MANUAL HIGH SCHOOL LESSON PLAN
Grade Level(s): 9-12
Subject: Chemistry I
Teacher: Brian Libby
Duration (# of days): 1
Date/Day(s): 18Jan2012
Week #: 19
Standards/Indicators: From the IPS chemistry pacing guide
 C.4.3 Given mass of the sample, use the mole concept to determine the number of moles and number of atoms or
molecules in samples of elements and compounds.
11-12.WS.2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including scientific procedures/ experiments.
 Introduce a topic and organize complex ideas, concepts, and information so that each new element builds on that
which precedes it to create a unified whole; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and
multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
 Develop the topic thoroughly by selecting the most significant and relevant facts, extended definitions, concrete
details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic.
Essential Skills (Objectives):
 Learning target: Students will be able to write clear instructions to find and use all pertinent information to find the
cost of one atom of aluminum.
Procedures: How will you facilitate the learning? Guided Practice (You do it, I help)
 BR- What are proportions?
 I will introduce the assignment: You are to find the cost of one atom of aluminum from a roll of foil. You will be given
a square of foil from the roll and may take any measurements you need to take on that square to help you.
 As a table, students are to come up with a detailed procedure for finding the cost of one atom of aluminum.
 Students will turn in their ‘group procedure’ at the end of class.
 CL – Tomorrow you will carry out your procedure!
Differentiation/Modifications:
 All materials will be available as hard copies and will be presented orally and visually.
 I have a couple EL students and they are paired with students who can translate for them if they don’t understand the
words or concepts. The group format (hands-on!) will help here, as well.
Resources:
 Computer, projector.
 Aluminum foil, receipt.
Assessment:
 I will be able to review student progress in class
 I will have their procedures.
Inspect & Reflect/Notes on this particular lesson: (What went well, what can be done differently next time…..to be completed
retrospectively/use back if necessary).
