COMS 105 - FUNDAMENTALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
IMPROMPTU PRESENTATION - BRAINSTORMING, part 2
•
Transfer the word/short phrase from each line on the previously completed Impromptu Speech Brainstorming, pt. 1 worksheet. Then,
begin deciding what needs to be discussed in the story, e.g. breaking down the story for each topic --each story breakdown always
begins with the ASSESSMENT step, which is where you set the scene and introduce the characters, then the CONFLICT, e.g. the
obstacle the character(s) face, and finally the TRANSFORMATION step, where we understand what the characters learned and how
they evolved by overcoming, or not overcoming the challenge.
•
In terms of factual history or a fictional story from entertainment, you decide what part of the story you will tell, e.g. is it one battle or a
whole war?, is it a scene or the whole movie?, etc. Also, remember that even happy moments are associated with challenges, because
we've all experienced unhappiness and that helps us identify those truly happy moments when they occur. Finally, remember that even if
you did not overcome a challenge, there was still a resolution, e.g. how you changed as a result.
•
While it's a small area for each step, it should only require one sentence and just enough so it will spark even more thoughts as you use
this document to be used as effective notes during your performance.
