You should be sure to personalize your cover letter to each site you apply to. It’s easy to spot a cookie-cutter cover letter so while it may take more time to personalize each letter, it is worth it to stand out and show you have taken the time to learn about the site and think about how your personal characteristics and experiences would be a fit for the organization. You can also look online for other examples and templates to integrate to make your own cover letter in a style that represents you! There are some very nice and visually appealing, unique examples out there. Feel free to be creative (within reason). If you are one of our students who is coming from a different field, making a career change, etc., review your current resume and then think about your duties in the context of your interpersonal interactions. Re-word your duties to highlight your experiences working with people, dealing with tough situations/people/personalities, problem-solving, organizing, etc. Put those types of duties at the top of your lists and move administrative duties to the bottom and simplify them/minimize them. You can also consider a different resume format such as a skills-based resume rather than using a chronological format. Play around with your format based on what your past experiences are and what you hope to convey to the reader. There are so many great templates out there that are creative and have different formats. Feel free to play around with the design so it represents you!
