Plan a Concert!
Part I: Program The Concert
Task: Your task is to program a concert for an imaginary choir program. For each grade level ensemble, use
www.jwpepper.com to find music for each choir, as well as a combined song to serve as either an opener or a
finale. Music selected should be appropriate for a concert- the appropriate voicings have been filled in already
for you. Music that is of high quality and is chosen with care may be considered for a future concert!
Step 1: Browse, listen, and pick music from JW Pepper that fits the criteria below for each group. Fill out the
required information on your spreadsheet. You MUST find 3 songs for each ensemble PLUS one combined
song for the opener or closer.

●
No more than one pop song per grade level
At least 2 of the 3 must have piano accompaniment
At least two songs must be in English
Must be appropriate for the grade level to execute
HOW TO FIND THE MUSIC?
1. Go to jwpepper.com
2. In the top left, select the “CHORAL” pull-down menu and click “School”
3. On the left side is a column full of filtering options under the “Middle School Choral Music” header. Pick any of these options EXCEPT
“Tenor-Bass Chorus”
4. From there, find titles that peak your interest. DO NOT just immediately choose the first 3 on the list. There are tons of pages of optionstake your time!
5. If you have an idea for a song, type in the title at the top of the screen’s search bar!
HOW TO DECODE WHAT’S ON YOUR SCREEN
1. On the left will be the option to Listen, View (usually shows the sheet music), or Watch (usually goes to a video of a choir singing). Some
will have all 3 options, some will have 1, some might have none. If there is not 1 of these options, do not program that song! These will
sometimes allow you to preview the whole song, and others only a small clip.
2. Under ‘Description’ (to the right of Listen/View/Watch), you’ll see a description of what the voicing is- pay attention to the voicing I
requested on your sheet!
3. Farther to the right, you’ll see the price per copy. Multiply this by the amount of singers listed in the choir to get the total price per song.
Part 2: Defend Your Choices!
Task: Choose 1 song you programmed from each grade level (or 2 grade levels and the finale) and explain to
me why those 3 songs are worthy of being programmed on one of our concerts! NEATLY write 5 sentences for
each song defending your choice and answering the questions below. Answers must be thoughtful complete
sentences.
Things to consider:
● Difficulty is reasonably challenging, but not out of reach.
● There are specific musical concepts to learn from the music (what does this piece let us learn or practice that we
haven’t learned yet this year?)
● Is the music interesting enough to capture the audience’s attention and keep our attention in rehearsal from
March - May?
● How do these three pieces fit together to create an interesting concert set?
