1. Halophiles are a type of bacteria that thrive in salty conditions. Staphylococcus epidermidis are
naturally occurring bacteria that live on our skin (again, naturally salty). Jose and Jacob want to keep
these organisms in a salt-water solution to show their friends. They make a salt (NaCl) and water
(H₂ O) solution to provide an adequate living environment for their new pets.
a. The mixture contains 1.35 moles of NaCl and 134.5 moles of H₂ O.
i.
How many grams of NaCl does the mixture contain?
ii.
How many atoms of NaCl does the mixture contain?
iii.
How many grams of H₂ O does the mixture contain?
iv.
How many atoms of H₂ O does the mixture contain?
2. If their mixture contains 4.67 x 10²⁷ atoms of NaCl, how many moles do we have?
a. Using your answer from above, how many grams of NaCl is within their solution?
3. It’s your birthday! Your friends gave you a bunch of balloons filled with helium to celebrate! How many atoms
are in 1 mole of Helium?
4. Iron (III) fluoride is commonly used in ceramic materials. In art class, your teacher asks for you to obtain
24.0 grams of FeF₃ from your crazy chemistry teacher. She is demanding to know how many moles you need.
How many moles are there in 24.0 grams of FeF₃ ?
5) Originally, sodium sulfate was primarily used as a laxative. Now, it is widely used in other materials, like
cakes (cake salt), attic insulation, and even used in glass to prevent the “air bubbles” from forming. Sodium
sulfate is also used in clothing to allow the “dye” to diffuse evenly throughout the material.
How many moles are there in 458 grams of Na₂ SO₄ ?
6) How many grams are there in 2.30 x 10²⁴ atoms of silver?
7) Luis is late, again. Today, he says that he went to the doctor because of a nose-bleed. His doctor stopped
the bleeding by applying silver nitrate to the area. Miracuously, the bleeding stopped and Luis eventually
made it to class. Being a concerned friend, Kevin wanted to know what else this compound could be used forhe googled the compound and found out it can also be used to remove warts! How neat!
How many grams are there in 7.40 moles of AgNO₃ ?
