REHEARSAL EXERCISES STANSILAVSKI AIMS & OBJECTIVES Focus & concentration must be continuous from curtain up to curtain down the aim of these exercises is to focus as a means to developing new aspects of your role By the end of the session, you will be able to: Objectives 1) Focus in the real world 2) Focusing in the imaginary world 3) Multi level focus 4) Identify that any person or thing on which we focus is called The Object of Attention Exercise (1) Object Focus Study the object that you are given, you will then have to describe its shape, colour, use & any special features The object is then removed & you are asked to tell the group what you remember, what caught your attention – compare remembered & real object Exercise (2) Picture study IN PAIRS Study the picture given to you The picture is taken away Describe what you saw Compare your description with the picture Exercise (3) Tactile Focus CLOSE YOUR EYES Feel the back of the chair, tell the group what shape it is, if there is any moulding Take various coins & describe their shape & value Try to separate a single strand of hair from a lock Exercise (4) Observation/Retention 3 group members are selected 5 group members are selected Part of the room is sectioned off & a number of things arranged ie furniture etc.. The 3 study the arrangement then leave the room. The things are rearranged, 3 return & put everything back they way it was Objects are arranged on a table – books, pencils etc.. 5 study the arrangement, they leave, everything is rearranged. Upon return 5 must put everything back as it was Exercise (5) Multi-level focus IN PAIRS Each of you will be given a sheet of paper with a mathematical problem on it you are required to solve it while the other partner asks questions which requires precise, logical answers Exercise (6) Real World Creative Source Material IN PAIRS Think of 2 or 3 interesting people you have seen in the street, train, bus etc.. What special characteristics, mannerisms, clothing, make-up interested you in each case? Describe them to your partner MAKE IT PRACTICE TO OBSERVE 2 OR 3 THINGS OR PEOPLE EACH DAY. RECORD IT IN YOUR DIARY/LOG TOMORROW’S TASK Take the first 10 pages of your play & start to divide the sections into UNITS you will need this for Wednesday’s session Remember where a new unit starts?
