NLCP-SCIENCE DEPARTMENT WEEKLY LESSON PLAN 2011-2012 COURSE: Honors Anatomy UNIT I: Human Body and Disease Red=Reading (CRS Reading) Blue=Science Green=Integrations WEEK: 1 LESSON OBJECTIVES To introduce students to the effects of the environment on the human body and to preview body systems. To build a basic understanding of homeostasis and the human body prior to delving into each human body system in depth. Primary focus on water, body chemistry and elements found in the human body. ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES SWBAT: 1. Define: water, electrolyte, electrolyte balance, homeostasis, mixture, solution, aqueous, suspension, colloid 2. Compare and contrast: solution, suspension, colloid 3. Compare and contrast: positive feedback vs. negative feedback 4. Identify and explain key issues related to water and hydration in the human body CRS/COMMON CORE SKILLS 20.S.1 Understand the methods and tools used in a moderately complex experiment 20.S.3 Identify a control in an experiment 24.I.6 Analyze given information when presented with new, simple information 24.S.3 Predict the results of an additional trial or measurement in an experiment 24.E.2 Determine whether given information supports or contradicts a simple hypothesis or conclusion, and why RST.11-12.2 RST.11-12.3 RST.11-12.4 RST.11-12.7 RST.11-12.9 Monday BEFORE What is body chemistry? (engage & excite) Why is water important to the body? Does chemistry really matter for Anatomy? DURING (explore & explain) Student Activities to Demonstrate Chemistry in Action in the Human Body: 1. Hidden Sugar 2. Magical Pink Water 3. Acid in Action Tuesday/Wednesday Block Thursday Friday Quickwrite: Why is chemistry Vocab Squares: Homoestasis, BW: Reading with CRS important in Anatomy and positive feedback, negative questions (“The Importance Physiology? feedback, aqueous solution of Water”) and Hydration Data Analysis (formative assessment for skills) Vocab Intro: solution, Finish: “Body Chemistry Intro 5-10 page read aloud-think suspension, colloid, aqueous, Activity” and “Missing” aloud homeostasis, positive feed psoters Sustained Silent Reading back, negative feedback -Student will write the definitions using context clues in a sentence Class Discussion: vocab words AFTER (elaborate & evaluate) Syllabus Safety Contract Text Book Online “Body Chemistry Intro Activity” “Missing” posters: students Introduce “Survival of the will select one element that Sickest” is found in the human body. Make a poster detailing what would happen if the element was “missing” and why they need to get it back. 2 columns journal CLOSING/HOME WORK MATERIALS NEEDED Signed Safety Contract Vocab Squares Text Books Projector PPT images 30 pages of weekly reading
