Squelch circuits in AM and
FM receivers are carrier-operated , On single sideband ,
which has no c a rr ie r,
squelch ing is more d ifficu lt.

hum an voice but ignor es noise, steady to nes,
a nd the Russi a n wood pecke r HF radar pulses . It requires no receiver mod ification a nd wo rks even when
vo ice signals are below the
noise le ve l.
Most SSB rigs with sq uelch,
e.g.. t he popu la r 2-mete r
mult im od e t ran sc e iver s,
use age (5-meter) vo ltage to
open sq uelch in SSB mode.
Age-operated sq uelch is adequate for st rong signa ls on
relatively quiet channels.
Agc and VOX-type squelch-
es open for a ny noise or hete rodyne that exceeds a prese t le vel . Weak si gna ls often a re missed because the

above the no ise level.

Discriminating the
Human Voice
People no rmally spea k

second. The sq ue lch work s
by detecting vo ice-ba nd e ne rgy (500-3000 H z) which is
varyi ng in frequency at a
rate of 0.5 to 3.25 H z .
The circuit is a type of
FM detector. It is insensitive to amplitude va riations
througho ut the range where
the input stage is not driven
to sa t u ra tio n b ut bac kgro u nd noi se is st ro ng
e no ugh to sa turate the limiter. The sq ue lc h wor ks
pro perly with most speakerle vel signa ls. You can connect it di rect ly to the receiver's detector output.

Circuit Description
U1A is a u nity-gain summing ampl ifier, in p ut buffe r. a nd low-pass filter with
3-k Hz c utoff. U1A d rives
U1 8 , a th ird-order high-pa ss
act ive filter with 3-d B c utoff at 500 Hz. We c hose
high-perform an c e FET-input operational amplifiers
so that act ive filters co uld
use high re sista nce s and
sma ll capacito rs. The n 084
quad o p-a m p c hip is e q uiva le nt to the Nationa l lF357.
U1C and U1D a re limi ter
amplifiers with a combined
gai n of 85 d B. U1 D's output
is voice-ba nd a ud io turned
in to co nsta n t-a m pl it u d e
sq ua re wa ve s. The sq ua re
waves trigge r CMOS monostab le m ultivib ra to r U2 .
Output of U2 is a train o f
.33-m illise co nd pu lses. o ne
fo r ea c h aud io cycle. The
average voltage o f U2's o utpu t is proporti onal to the input freq uency. U2 a nd the
fo llo w ing low-pass filte r
form a fre quency-to-voltage converter, i.e ., FM d etecto r, somew hat sim ila r to

bias network even though

which sets U2's period. can
be va ried to keep U3A's quiescent o utp ut voltage ne a r

U3A's output is ac-co upled to U3B. which a m plifies with a ga in o f 2, a nd
thenc e to U3C. a unity-ga in
inverte r. U3 B and U3C together fo rm a phase splitte r
w ith a gain o f 2. The pha se

splitter provides posmvegoing outputs for positive
and negative frequency devia tions of the re c e ive r
audio.
Comparators U4A and
U4 B d e t e c t t he ra te -o fc ha nge-of-f req ue ncy signals fro m the phase-spl itter
outputs . If the vo ltage at
the inverting (-) input of
U4A o r U48 exceeds the reference voltage set by
squelch-threshold control
R30, then the low-going leve l at the compa rators' paralleled open-collector outputs disc ha rges C20
th rou gh R34 a nd D1 . The
disc ha rge time constant is
10 m illise co nds. C20. R35.
and comparator U4C form
a time-delay circuit which
holds squelch open during
its one-second period . Each
detector output longer than
10 milliseconds resets the
timer for another one seco nd. R35 controls length of
delay .
U4C's outp ut is t h e
squelc h-open signal (active
high). U4C tu rns o n hysteres is-sw itc h tran si st or Q1
(whic h lights LED2) a nd activates output-driver U4D.
As shown. U4D's o utput
goes high to unsquelch. We
used normally-closed relay
contacts so that the speaker
is enabled when the relay is
tu rned off o r if power is remo ved from the squelc h
c ircuit. To reve rse the se nse
of the o utput, exc ha nge t he
(+) a nd (-) inputs of U4D.

the PC board .) U4D's opencol lector output can drive a
relay in the speaker lead, as
shown. or a gated amplifier,
ana log gate, optoisolator.

sched uled contacts, e specia lly with modern digitally-tuned re c e ive rs which
