The University Background
The St. Gabriel Foundation, a worldwide
organization founded in France in 1705,
is responsible for the establishment and
administration of Assumption University.
The Foundation has been dedicated to
education and philanthropic activities in
Thailand for more than 100 years and it
now operates 14 educational institutions
providing all levels of education.
Assumption School of Business was initially founded in 1969 and in 1972 it become Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC). In 1975 the Ministry
of University Affairs accredited ABAC and
later in 1990 it was accredited a fullyfledged university, and renamed as Assumption University (AU). The University
is administered by a Council which takes
policy initiatives and provides guidance
for long-term planning and formulation of
control procedures.
Today, AU is considered the leading private university in Thailand in the fields
of Business, Management and Information Technology as demonstrated by the
placement of many of its graduates in key
management and technological positions
in industry, government, banking and
multi-national conglomerates worldwide.
The University’s curriculum is patterned
after the American semester/trimester
hour credit system and most textbooks
are similar to those used in international
universities. Graduates receive an education that is both globally marketable
and flexible leading to highly productive
careers within the various sectors of soci-
ety from which the students come and to
which they aspire.
CAMPUSES
The AU also maintains a downtown campus which is located on the 14th fl. of the
ZEN Department Store @ Centralworld
in the centre of Bangkok. This campus
facilitates classes for master’s programs,
short-courses, work-shops and seminars.
The original campus called Hua Mak
Campus is a compact, vertical campus
comprising 17 buildings with the tallest
having a total of 16 fl.s. A small lake surrounded by lush gardens and seating is
a focal point of beauty and tranquility.
Food, convenience and service shops
to support student needs surround the
campus. This will become the home of
postgraduate faculties in the near future.
Within the ABAC City Campus, we provide state-of-the art professional and
functional training facilities in an ideal
learning environment. Our computer labs
and 10 classrooms, which have seminar
room with a capacity of up to 100 seats,
are a best fit for business discussions,
meetings, networking, business and IT
professional training. Our classrooms
are equipped with high-technology, such
as interactive whiteboards, WiFi access,
VDO conferencing and broadcast facilities, high quality LCD projectors and other business meeting room facilities.
Assumption University maintains two
main campuses: the original campus located at Hua Mak in the city, and the new
campus at Suvarnabhumi, some thirty
minutes to the South of the city.
The Suvarnabhumi Campus,
constructed as a “University in a Park”,
comprises 200 acres of a beautifully landscaped assembly of mixed architecture
surrounded by lush, tropical gardens and
trees. Designed to host the university’s
undergraduate degree programs, it offers
everything: a meeting/ exhibition center,
hotel, non-coeducational dormitories,
a magnificent chapel, a museum, three
academic halls, and much more.
The centerpiece of the campus is the
Cathedral of Learning, a 39-storey tower
which houses student support services,
the library, reception halls, seminar rooms
and offices. Transportation between the
two campuses is convenient and inexpensive. Shuttles run throughout the day
between various points in Bangkok and
the Suvarnabhumi Campus.

services, a well-equipped physical fitness center as well as

the halls. For the less athletic, there is also a table tennis
recreation and board game room. A comprehensive sports
complex is under construction, which will have a 50-meter
Olympic sized swimming pool, an indoor stadium, gymnasium and other fitness space.
APPLYING
FOR A STUDENT VISA
------------------------------------------------------------
1. You will need to know the location of your nearest Royal
Thai Embassy or Consulate office. Please note that Consulates accept posted visa applications only which can
vary in process time depending on the office and the time
of your pending departure. If you go in person to the Royal
Thai Embassy applications are normally processed within
three days. However this is not a guarantee, therefore it is
reasonable to apply a couple of weeks before departure to
allow for any unforeseen delays.
2. Each person’s situation is different, of course, and there
is no magic explanation or single document, certificate, or
letter, which can guarantee visa issuance.
3. You need to be able to articulate the reasons you will
study in your chosen program. You should also be able to
explain how studying in Thailand is related to your future
professional career when you return home.
24 : G raduate Studies Prospectus 2014
4. It should be clear at a glance to the officer dealing with
your application what written documents you are presenting and what they signify. Lengthy written explanations
cannot be quickly read or evaluated. You will be required
to produce a copy of the admissions acceptance letter from
Assumption to yourself.
5. Do not engage the consular officer in an argument. If
you are denied a student visa, ask the officer for a list of
documents he or she would suggest you bring in order to
overcome the refusal, and try to get the reason for which
you were denied visa in writing.
HOW TO GET THE CHEAPEST
STUDENT AIRFARES - THAILAND
WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY STEPS
TOWARDS STUDYING AT Au?
Buy a Student Universe Exclusive Fare
When you see the symbol to the right, it means the associated fare is available exclusively for full-time students,
youth, or faculty. If you purchase a ticket and are not eligible for the special fare, you may be refused boarding by
the airline. If this happens, you will not receive a refund for
your ticket.
Get a Passport:
You can apply for a passport at post offices, and county
and municipal offices. Apply several months before you
leave, especially if you need visas from foreign embassy.
When you apply, bring proof of citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate, a naturalization certificate, a consular
report of birth abroad, a previous passport, or a certificate
of citizenship. You must also bring proof of identity, such as
a driver’s license, a current student or work ID, or an old
passport. You will also need two 2”x2” photos of yourself
taken in the past six months.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Buy a Regular Fare
Regular fares are available to all of our customers, regardless of age or status. When our student fares are not available on a particular flight, regular fares are a great alternative.
Fly Midweek
Airlines often add a weekend surcharge of $25-40 (each
way) for flights on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Try Several Dates
If your schedule is flexible, try flying a day before or a day
after the dates you originally entered. This can increase
your chances of finding availability and a great price.
Search Major Airports, as well as Local Airports
Check fares from your local airport, but search fares from
your closest major city (Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago,
New York) as well. Competition among the airlines is higher
in larger markets, and fares are sometimes lower.
Book Early
Fares are subject to airline availability, which changes
frequently. Airlines allot only a certain number of student
fare tickets. Once those tickets are sold, there are no more
student fares available, even if it appears there are still
seats on the plane.
------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as you receive your passport, make a copy of the
front page that has all your identification information, and
keep it in a separate place from your passport. If your passport is lost or stolen, the copy will make it easier to get a
new one.
Get a Visa:
Do some research and find out if your country of destination requires a visa. If so what kind of visa will you need?
Sixty percent of the world’s countries require visas for any
length of stay. If you travel, you may need visas for other
countries. Apply early for visas. Processing time varies
widely. Embassy addresses and phone numbers can be
found at www.GoAbroad.com
Get your shots:
The Center for Disease Control offers the most up-to-date
information regarding vaccinations and shots. You should
also consult your doctor.
Get a student ID:
International Student IDs provide you with discounts at
museums, for youth admissions and fares for transportation and other great discounts. In many cases your student
ID from your school will suffice. The additional benefit of
an International Student ID is the travel insurance, which
usually includes minimal accident, health, repatriation and
medical evacuation insurance. There are two major sources for student Ids. ISIC Card which can be obtained at any

Consider a phone card:
Do a little research and find out how you’ll be communicating with your people back home. Phone cards are great but

Another recently developed option is the travel cellular, though expensive; you’ll have a number to give your
friends before you get on the plane. (www.TravelCell.com)
The choice is your personal preference and may well be
decided by the length of time you will be studying at
Assumption.
Carry phone into Thailand:
If you already have a mobile phone it is recommended you
bring it with you to Thailand. Once settled down in Bangkok
you can then simply purchase a Thai SIM card for a very
reasonable price. However do not continue to using your
SIM card from your home country as any calls made or
received in Thailand will be hugely expensive.
Get Insured:
In addition to the basic coverage provided by the ISIC card,
you should take additional comprehensive travel insurance. Your coverage should include medical evacuation
and repatriation. Two reliable and reputable sources are:
CMI Insurance Specialists www.goabroad.com/travelinsurance/index.cfm, Cultural Insurance Services International
CISI www.goabroad.com/travelinsurance/index.cfm
However, it is recommended that you shop around and
find the most appropriate cover for your circumstances and
length of stay.
Develop a budget:
Consider the in-country costs before you go. You should
develop a budget and live by it. Consider the costs of optional excursions, gifts, school supplies, internet access,
in-country transportation and general living costs. Many
a student, has lost their mind at one of the night clubs in
Bangkok and have spent their semester budgets in their
first week abroad. Try to familiarise yourself with the local
currency, and calculate your budget in that currency.
26 : G raduate Studies Prospectus 2014
Research your destination:
You’re going to experience culture shock, no matter how
cool you are, regardless of how diverse you are, and with
no regard to your language ability you will have culture
shock. One of the ways to have a better experience is to
have realistic expectations. Read everything you can about
your future home. The Lonely Planets guide to Thailand is
a very informative book with hordes of information on Thailand and Bangkok, a few evenings reading through this before you go will at least give you an idea of what to expect.
Pack Light:
Bangkok is warm all year round, you will not need to pack a
case full of sweaters and other woolen clothes. Pack light!
Do research on your destination in advance, find out what
kind of items you must bring (for example- English t-bags
are scarce and somewhat expensive). In Bangkok you will
find almost anything you would expect to find in any Western City, and a whole lot more. Once more, items you may
be considering to buy before leaving for Thailand (such as
cotton shirts) will almost certainly be more expensive in
your home country than in Thailand. If you are not sure you
will need it, leave it at home!

to apply for a new visa (ED only) to the Thai embassy or
consulate in the country where you are staying. They’ll give
you a new visa valid for 3 months. It may take them a few
days so be prepared.

the Immigration Department by yourself and, pay them a
penalty of 2,000 Baht for missing your date and report your
place of residence. If you lose your 90-day report tag (it
will be attached to your passport), the Immigration Department will charge you an additional penalty of (2,000 Baht to
5,000 baht). AU will not pay your penalties. (We’ll take you
there provided that you go on our scheduled trip)

become a student. The procedure to change your status is

change your visa status, you are required to have at least
30 valid days on your present visa. Several documents are
required from both the university and you, the production of

58 : G raduate Studies Prospectus 2014
The Graduate School of English grew out of a
co-operative program with St. Michael’s College
in Vermont, U.S.A. whereby two faculty members
from Assumption University taught a large group
of Assumption University lecturers in an M.A, program so as to upgrade the qualifications of those
faculty members. In 1999, the Institute for English
Language Education was set up out of the then
existing English Language Center with a Graduate Wing. This wing started with two lecturers
but quickly expanded to five lecturers by 2002. A
second M.A. in English Language and Literatures
was established in December 2001. The Graduate Wing’s goal was to develop the University’s
position as a leader in the fields of English and
English Language Teaching and to facilitate the
continued education of the University’s other faculty members. In 2004, the Graduate Wing was
administratively separated from the Undergraduate Wing of the I.E.L.E. and went through four
different directors over the ensuing few years. In
2005, Dr. Conlon was asked to direct the graduate wing again. The M.A. in ELT was revised and
the M.A. in ELL was discontinued for financial
reasons. After a period of consolidation which
involved hiring new internationally recognized faculty members as well as the transformation of the
by-then defunct The English Teacher: An International Journal into The New English Teacher and
the establishment of a new journal, Asian Journal of Literature, Culture and Society, a period
of expansion ensued with the development of a
Ph.D. in ELT and the forging of new co-operative
agreements with SEAMEO RELC and RETRAC in
Vietnam as well as with universities in Indonesia,
China, Vietnam and Japan and the agreement
with the University of Nottingham was renegotiation to focus on inter-faculty development and
research. In 2007, the Graduate School of English
was officially instituted by the University Council
and a Dean was appointed to run it. The GSE now
has a faculty of eight members and has recently
begun to apply for the opening of a new M.A. in
Professional English Media Studies and is planning another M.A. in Multilingual Education.

FACULTY OF
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
We are living in a world full of technological changes.
While these changes bring countless benefits to our
lives, they are also accompanied by a number of serious issues. To us, these issues can be captured into
one simple phrase: the need to adapt. And this needs
to adapt applies to all levels of organization, individuals included.
At corporate level, those that failed to adapt to this
world of changing technologies hardly survived, as
can be seen in the collapses of many glorious giant
companies of the past in recent years. At departmental levels, running today’s IT department requires IT
managers to constantly be on the cutting edge and
ready to utilize new technologies to improve its core
competencies. Individuals and SMEs that are not
ready to adapt risk the chance of being eliminated,
when larger players utilize the latest technologies that
threaten their existence. It is needless to say, then,
that only those who can efficiently utilize technologies
will survive in this highly competitive and dynamic environment.
In our faculty, we do not only focus on how technologies work; we prepare our stu- dents to meet demands of real-world business and its changes. Our
goal is to equip our students with the knowledge,
best practices, and latest technologies that are of
high demand in the industry. And we do this through
our fine faculty of instructors that are actively involved
not only in cutting-edge technology research, but
also in working alongside industrial partners from
both private and public sectors. We boast our excellence in both, with our research works continuously
being published in highly acclaimed international conferences and journals, and our technical exper- tise
winning several grants and contracts from high-end
companies throughout the world.
But we do not stop there. We believe that, in the
world of technologies, there are no finish lines. Tools
and technical skills that are required in today eventually become ob- solete as our students step further
into their career. So, we constantly ask ourselves,
“What do we teach to our students so that they can
adapt to the changes 10 years from now?” We want
our students to think, analyze and find the solutions
for them- selves, and not to repeat the mistakes of
others. Regardless of what they study, our students
are routinely taught to develop their critical thinking,
reasoning, and ana- lytical skills. Skills that can be
applied to any techniques, technologies and environment. Skills that will enable them to cope with all the
changes when the time needs them to do so.

PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION

form, and transform any graduate to
be a “conscience of the society”. While

and authentic dialogue, those in the
philosophical programs are expected
to attain ‘intellectual freedom” or “intellectual autonomy” or what Kant previously called “Enlightenment.” It does
not matter whether our students are
Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs or other believers. Indeed, it
does matter whether they are authentic
in their beliefs. We evaluate their authenticity by the following criteria:
(1)
(2)
(3)
They should be able to defend
and justify their own faiths.
They should be able to put their
beliefs into practice.
They should be able to have true
dialogue and peaceful coexistence with those who have
different faiths.
All students, who have different
backgrounds, are expected to become
graduate with 3 C’s : competency
(cognitive skills), character (moral

mankind. Therefore, we at Assumption
University have the aim to promote both
science and religion. The matter of science
and religion should not be an “either…or” but a
“both…and” way of thinking. Lacking an
appreciation of either of the two can cause the
problems. How can we bridge the gap between
science and religion? We can do it through
process philosophy which integrates both
science and religion into our way of life.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Warayuth Sriwarakuel
Dean, Graduate School of Philosophy and
Religion
PHILOSOPHY
The Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion
is committed to the tenet that “with respect to
the fundamental rights of the person, all kinds of
discrimination, whether social or cultural, whether
based on sex, race, color, social condition, language, or religion, are to be overcome and eradicated as contrary to God’s intent” (Vatican Council II, Gaudium et spes, No. 29).
VISION
The Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion strives to be one of the leading schools in
the region for the promotion of spiritual freedom,
intellectual freedom, mutual understanding and
peaceful co-existence.
MISSION
The Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion aims at creating persons of integrity committed to lifelong learning that will continue to
guide the graduate in their personal growth. To
achieve this goal, interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches are used in all programs. There
is a special attempt to harmonize the intellectual
and the spiritual in consonance with the saying
of Einstein: “Science without religion is lame, but
religion without science is blind.” The school also
follows the path of harmony between Eastern and
Western thought in religion and science through
philosophy. To enhance this harmony, the school
promotes pluralistic thinking. The school is itself
a community of professors and students who
come from diverse backgrounds of religious belief, culture, and nationality. Thus the school has
four main strategic goals:
highly qualified
graduate students of philosophy and religious
studies, high-quality researches and academic
works, knowledge-based/learning community,
and peaceful co-existence.
