ENGL1101: Mini Activity 2 (IN CLASS) Editing Scavenger Hunt Directions: Individually, work through the steps of this editing/polishing activity. Use the functions as directed in your word processor (the cues written here have Microsoft Word in mind, but you can achieve this in BOTH google docs and pages if needed). Upon finishing the tasks, upload the highlighted, track changes, and commented draft. Then as you make final revisions and edits, choose to accept or reject the changes. Some changes like marking and remedying punctuation missteps should stay; however, others that ask you to make stylistic structural changes are optional to keep. Do this activity in the order listed; turn on track changes after completing the first two sections. The goal of the mini activity is to help you see how you can articulate content differently, clearly, and apply knowledge of GUMP. PSA: BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL HIGHLIGHTING, TRACK CHANGES AND COMMENTS BEFORE UPLOADING A FINAL DRAFT ON 9/22. Highlighting: 1) 2) 3) 4) Highlight in yellow all introductory phrases and which statements. Highlight in magenta all coordinating conjunctions that do not connect a list Highlight in green all commas. Highlight in blue any typos (capitalization, usage, missing periods, etc.) Comment Function 1) Look at all of your yellow highlighting. Add comments on the ones that need punctuation (commas), feel repetitive, and/or could be removed without changing the content. 2) Look at all of your magenta highlighting. Add comments on the ones that are compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions (not a compound verb OR a compound subject). In the comment remind yourself to add the comma if it is missing OR suggest a way to change the sentence if you find that you use this construction too often. 3) Look at all of your green highlighting. Add comments on the ones you should revisit when you edit because they might be comma splices. In the comments, suggest how you will choose to edit for this (divide the sentence into two, add a coordinating conjunction, use a semicolon). Track Changes (turn on FULL MARKUP) 1) Go to each piece that is highlighted blue. Fix the typo 2) Go to the yellow highlighting that has comments. Add the needed commas. 3) Go to the magenta highlighting that has comments. Make the necessary edits to make your sentences grammatically correct. 4) Go to the green highlighting that has comments. Make edits including at least one that uses the semicolon. Notes: This activity will be begun in class but may need to be finished outside of class time. Please export to PDF and upload it BY 9pm. When you revisit this document to make final revisions, start by accepting/rejecting changes; removing the highlighting; and resolving the comments. After you do that turn off track changes so it does not continue to mark up your draft.
