A business-friendly Indonesia looks to a
bright 2018
Top industries
Overall outlook
Driven in particular by domestic consumption and investments, Indonesia
is once again anticipating a positive economic outlook in 2018, with
macroeconomic indicators looking strong. The World Bank upgraded
Indonesia’s rating for ease of doing business by 19 points in 2017, while
according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index
2017-2018, Indonesia ranked 36th out of 137 surveyed countries in
terms for global competitiveness. It is hoped that continued stability and
infrastructure improvements, plus the upcoming Asian Games held in
Jakarta and Palembang from August this year, will translate to positive
business sentiment throughout the year.
“Overall we’re expecting continued growth again in Indonesia across
most markets. Most sectors are seeing strong growth, with the
only exception being more traditional retail. Digital, technology and
e-commerce are still showing an upward trend: the burgeoning
e-commerce space has enjoyed a boom over the past two years.
While this spike in demand may cool down, we anticipate the need
for upskilling in key positions. Technology is growing quickly too, with
a strong demand for talent ranging from programmers to CIO-level.”

Key trends
• S ignificant growth in the industrial and manufacturing space, both in
the capital city Jakarta, as well as tier two and three regions. There has
been strong growth from local conglomerates, demanding mid-tosenior level management, typically talent sourced from MNCs, in a bid
to further modernise and develop Indonesia’s family owned businesses.
• Particularly encouraging has been the strength of home-grown
employment: 85% of the placements in 2017 were Indonesian passport
holders, and there continues to be a strong desire to bring Indonesians
into key positions. The Returning Indonesians programme, Membangun
Negeri (or ‘Building a Nation’) has enjoyed a lot of success in bringing
people back to Indonesia, with demand in particular in high quality
graduates from fields including sales and marketing, technology as well
as across more senior management.
• Human Resources continues to grow as a discipline, as companies
prioritise more sustainable growth plans. Logistics is seen as another
area key for growth in 2018, while Marketing professionals are in strong
demand – although there remains a candidate shortage in this area.

Please note: 1. Market rates are becoming much less homogeneous; while we have taken great care, these salary ranges can only be approximate guides. Since there
are often specific circumstances relating to individual companies, please call us for additional information. 2. These figures are generally the total remuneration (i.e. cash),
excluding bonus / incentive schemes. 3. Variable and incentive schemes are becoming more common through the different levels of management and are not included in
