1. Canada’s Natural Resources
include: coal, fish, hydroelectric
dams, oil, minerals, timber, natural
gas- oil is found in western Canada
2. Canada has a lower population in
certain areas because of climate. The
northern part of Canada is extremely
cold. Population density is highest
along the USA- Canada border.
3. Europeans first came to Canada
looking for Northwest passage, but
it didn’t exist. Instead Europeans
found that the fur trade would make
them rich.
4. The first peoples to inhabit Canada
were called the First Nations and
Inuit. The First Nations were the
first to make use of Canada’s
resources.
5. Canada has many different climate
regions. They include: maritime,
continental, sub-arctic, arctic,
tundra. The Tundra is the coldest
with freezing temps most of the
year.
6. Canada Government: Constitutional
Monarchy
- 3 branches ( Executive,
Legislative, Judicial)
- Legislative Branch: Parliamenttwo houses: House of
Commons/Senate
- Executive: Prime Minister has the
most Power/ Governor General is
the Queens representative
7. Multiculturalism when people from
different areas retain their cultural
identities.
8. Canada Government is bilingual: it
has two national languages- French/
English.
9. Canada is a part of NAFTA: USA,
Canada, Mexico. Thus, Canada’s
most important trading partner is the
USA.
Vocabulary:
Tundra: areas with limited vegetation
except for moss and shrubs.
Mixing Zone: an area where water
mixes and stirs up nutrients from the
ocean floor.
New France: French colony in what is
now eastern Canada.
Dominion: Territory that governs itself,
but it’s still tied to its colonizing
country.
Constitutional Monarchy: a system of
government in which the laws in the
constitution limit the powers of the
Monarchy.
Cultural Mosaic: a place where people
from different areas retain their cultural
identities.
Permafrost: soil that never thaws.
Glaciers: sheets of ice formed by
compacted snow.
