Critical success factors for Centex : • Aggressive & selective expansion through acquisition (Economies of scale) o In EMS industry, the rule to succeed is to be a very big global company coming under Tier – 1, which Centex has capitalized upon very early. • Cost savings on the electronics products manufactured • Maintaining low SCM costs as % of revenues 2. Key problems that Centex faces with respect to its supply chain & business processes : • Lack of integration of its ERP & WMS systems • Improper MRP run forecasts, which is not based on HP’s requirements but based on raw material supplies from the suppliers. This disrupted the supply chain • Unavailability of dedicated manufacturing line for the major client of Boston facility • Inability of ERP system to track inventory on the shop floor has led to a few electronic parts remain in WIP timelessly unless a physical counting takes place to update the right values. 3. Process improvements & IT system recommendations Centex should make : • The ERP system might have decoded a lot of inter-functional barriers but Centex needs to continuously upgrade to patch up all loopholes in their functional departments, such as to track inventory on shop floor. This can be cost effectively done by bolting on some new applications to the ERP so that the interchange is as smooth as possible too • It is evident from the case that there is a lack of integration of Centex’ ERP & WMS systems. Hence integration of these two systems should be one of the first tasks to be completed to achieve better functional efficiency within the firm’s departments. Or they can opt for best-of-breed systems & choose a WMS that’d be compatible with the current ERP • To avoid fluctuations in supplies of raw materials & variability in MRP run forecasting, they should start integrating the whole supply chain (including suppliers to Centex & clients of Centex such as HP, IBM, etc.) to supply to the end customer 2|Page
