Original Solution (NH4+)




Flame Test CC1 (K+, Na+)
Put 10 drops in an evaporating dish
Make alkaline w/ 6M NaOH, add
2 more drops
Cover dish using a watchglass with wet,
red litmus paper attached on the underside
Warm the solution (don’t boil)
NH4+



Clean platinum wire loop with clean concentrated HCl and
heating with flame until red hot until no unusual color is
observed
Evaporate about 2 drops of CC1, cool and discard any
precipitate, then add 1 drop of conc. HCl
Dip clean wire loop to the solution, then insert to the
oxidizing zone of gas flame
With Blue Filter
2 seconds or more with colored flame
observed through filter:
K+
Without Blue Filter
5 seconds or more with colored flame
observed with the naked eye:
Na+
