Welcome
In dit boekje vindt u data, tijden, locaties en
korte beschrijvingen van alle activiteiten
van het PAS-festival. Sommige lezingen of
acts worden hetzij diezelfde avond, hetzij op
een andere avond herhaald. Voor een aantal
lezingen geldt dat ze zowel in het Nederlands
als in het Engels worden gegeven. Per
avond is er een aparte categorie lectures
voor Engelssprekenden. Voor het culturele
programma gebruiken we zoveel mogelijk
Engelstalige beschrijvingen, tenzij het een
Nederlandstalig programma betreft.

repeated, either the same evening or the
following one. And some lectures are given in
both Dutch and English. Each evening has a
separate category of English-spoken lectures.

Inleiding
NL
Diversiteit staat hoog op de agenda van de
Universiteit Maastricht en is daarom ook een
thema dat tijdens het PAS-festival aan de
orde komt. Bij de lezing over EU and Disability
Rights (zaterdag) bijvoorbeeld. Ook een lezing
van Arjen Leerkes over vluchtelingen (vrijdag)
sluit aan op het thema en zeker de ontmoeting
met vluchtelingen tijdens het uitwisselen van
recepten onder de noemer Taste & Talk (vrijdag
en zaterdag), een initiatief van het Refugee
Project Maastricht. Verder komt het terug in
de wereldmuziek van onder andere Cissoko &
Goetze (vrijdag) en Noam Vazana (zaterdag)
en in de tentoonstelling The Ideal Woman.
Graag verwijzen we in dit kader ook naar het
videoproject Identities van Studio Take Twee.
Prachtige videoportreten die zowel vrijdag als
zaterdag te zien zijn waarbij ontmoetingen
met de geportretteerden plaatsvinden.
Het Pleasure, Art & Science Festival (PAS)
wordt voor de zesde keer georganiseerd. Het
is inmiddels een traditie dat de Universiteit
Maastricht aan het begin van het academisch
jaar de deuren openzet om iedereen uit stad
en regio te trakteren op een programma vol
interessante wetenswaardigheden, mooie
en swingende muziek, bijzondere dans,
straattheater en meer. Het wordt weer twee
avonden keuzestress bij een aanbod van
pakweg 120 activiteiten. Dit jaar hebben we
vier PAS-ambassadeurs die met hun keuze
jou op weg kunnen helpen. Zij laten zien
dat er voor iedereen iets te doen is. Je kunt
gemakkelijk verschillende programma’s
samenstellen.
Een ander belangrijk thema binnen de
universiteit is duurzaamheid. Tijdens het PASfestival wordt aan dit thema aandacht besteed
bij lezingen over vliegschaamte (vrijdag),
synthetische biologie (vrijdag en zaterdag),
circulaire biobased economie (zaterdag) en
Climate Reality (zaterdag) en bij de presentatie
van Grassa! (vrijdag) op het Brightlands
Square. In de workshop Climate Collage van
Mondiaal Maastricht (zaterdag) kan men ook
zelf met het thema aan de slag.
Thema’s
Het bijzondere van het PAS-festival is de
grote variëteit in het programma. Om toch
wat richting te geven, werken we dit jaar met
een paar thema’s en wordt er een Brightlands
Square ingericht. Speciaal op de vrijdagavond
is er de HistoBistro waar historische recepten
centraal staan en waar ook geproefd kan
worden.
In september is het 75 jaar geleden dat
Maastricht werd bevrijd en in het kader
daarvan speelt de accordeonist Roger Moreno
zowel op vrijdag als op zaterdag in de tuin
van de galerie Röell en spreekt historicus
Herman van Rens op vrijdag twee keer over
Cosel, waar Joodse mannen van een transport
werden gehaald om dwangarbeid te gaan
verrichten.
Alumnidag UM
Op zaterdagmiddag 7 september is er een
gezamenlijk programma voor alle alumni van
de UM. Een mooie kans om de universiteit te
bezoeken en studiegenoten te treffen. En duik
daarna samen in de gezellige drukte van het
PAS-festival.

Brightlands Square
HistoBistro
Bijzonder is de samenwerking met Brightlands
dit jaar. Brightlands wordt gevormd door de
Maastricht Health Campus, de Chemelot
Campus in Sittard-Geleen, de Smart Services
Campus Heerlen en de Campus Greenport
Venlo. Op en rond deze vier campussen
werken ruim 20.000 studenten, ondernemers
en wetenschappers samen aan door
innovatie gedreven ontwikkelingen. Zij zoeken
voortdurend naar de plekken waar uitdagingen,
oplossingen en expertises elkaar raken.
Universiteit Maastricht, Hogeschool Zuyd, het
bedrijfsleven en de Provincie Limburg werken
hierin samen.
Op de vrijdagavond van het PAS-festival geven
de Universiteitsbibliotheek Maastricht, Centre
Céramique, het Regionaal Historisch Centrum
Limburg, en het Koninklijk Limburgs Geschieden Oudheidkundig Genootschap door middel
van hun bijzondere collecties en kennis een
kijkje in de historische keuken.
Innovatie in Limburg
Oude smaken herleven op het PAS-festival
Ze presenteren een mooie selectie historische
kookboeken uit hun Bijzondere Collecties, er
zijn lezingen, een workshop en er kan geproefd
worden. De HistoBistro wordt ingericht in
de hal van het bestuursgebouw op de Minderbroedersberg 4-6 en in de aangrenzende
ruimtes zijn lezingen en een workshop.
Voor wie meer wil weten hierover, richten
we in de hal van de rechtenfaculteit op de
Lenculenstraat 26 het Brightlands Square in.
Hier zijn demonstraties en presentaties van
Data Visualisation, de Balance Belt, Grassa!
en Mijn Breincoach. Tegelijkertijd zijn er
in dezelfde hal van andere organisaties
ook nog virtual reality projecten en in de
aangrenzende Statenzaal Brightlandslezingen over de nieuwste technologische
ontwikkelingen. Onderwerpen als nanoscopieonderzoek, circulaire biobased economie (van
SappiMaastricht BV), massaspectrometrie
en data visualisatie komen daarbij aan bod.
Onno Kleyn, culinair journalist en schrijver van
Luilekkerland, zal voor deze smaakvolle avond
een lezing geven over zijn onderzoek naar
400 jaar koken in Nederland. Smaakprofessor
en gastronoom Peter Klosse spreekt over de
smaak van de toekomst. Wil je zelf historisch
koken? Schuif dan aan bij de workshop van
Marleen Willebrands en Peer Boselie. Smaakt
dit naar meer? Kom dan naar de histo(rische)
bistro en proef het verleden!

As one of Maastricht University’s top priorities,
diversity is also one of the themes of the PAS
Festival. For instance, there is the lecture about
EU and Disability Rights (Saturday). A lecture
by Arjen Leerkens about refugees (Friday)
links up with the theme, as does the meeting
with refugees during the exchange of recipes
entitled Taste & Talk (Friday and Saturday), an
initiative of the Refugee Project Maastricht.
The theme also recurs in the world music of
Cissoko & Goetze (Friday) and Noam Vazana
(Saturday), as well as in the exhibition The
Ideal Woman. We refer you in particular to the
video project Identities by Studio Take Twee. It
shows some wonderful video portraits on both
Friday and Saturday, and you can also meet the
people in the portraits.
This is the sixth edition of the Pleasure,
Art & Science Festival (PAS). It is now a
tradition that Maastricht University opens its
doors at the start of the academic year and
treats everyone from the city and region to a
programme of interesting information, great
swinging music, special dance and street
theatre, and much more. Once again, there are
two evenings filled with a staggering choice
of around 120 activities. This year, we have
four PAS ambassadors who give you tips on
what to see. They’ll show you that there’s
something for everyone and that you can
put together various programmes.
Another important theme at the university
is sustainability. The PAS Festival will
focus on this theme in lectures about flight
shame (Friday), synthetic biology (Friday
and Saturday), circular biobased economy
(Saturday) and Climate Reality (Saturday),
and in the presentation by Grassa! (Friday)
on Brightlands Square. And in the workshop
Climate Collage by Mondiaal Maastricht
(Saturday), people can get to grips with the
theme themselves.
Themes
A special feature of the PAS Festival is the
great variety of its programme. To give a few
guidelines, this year we’re working with a few
themes and setting up Brightlands Square.
On Friday evening, there’s a special event: the
HistoBistro, which revolves around historical
recipes that can also be tasted.
September marks the occasion of the 75th
anniversary of the liberation of Maastricht. To
celebrate this fact, accordionist Roger Moreno
will be playing in the garden of the Röell Gallery
on both Friday and Saturday, and historian
Herman van Rens will give two talks on Friday
about Cosel, where Jewish men were taken off
the transports to carry out forced labour.
UM Alumni Day
In the afternoon of Saturday 7 September,
there’s a collective programme for all the
UM alumni. It’s a great opportunity to visit
the university and meet up with your fellow
students again. And afterwards you can get
swept up in the PAS Festival whirl together.

Innovation in Limburg
Reviving the tastes of the past at the
PAS Festival
We have a special collaboration this year with
Brightlands, which is formed by the Maastricht
Health Campus, the Chemelot Campus in SittardGeleen, the Smart Services Campus Heerlen
and the Campus Greenport Venlo. These four
campuses and their surroundings are home
to over 20,000 students, entrepreneurs and
scientists, who work together on innovationdriven developments. They are continually
searching for the points at which challenges,
solutions and experts meet. Maastricht
University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences,
the business community and the Province of
Limburg all work together on this.
On Friday evening, the Maastricht University
Library, Centre Céramique, the Regional
Historic Center Limburg and the Historical and
Archaeological Society of Limburg will give a
glimpse of historical cuisine, drawing on their
unique collections and expertise.
They will present a fine selection of historical
cookery books from their Special Collections,
besides giving lectures, a workshop and
tasting sessions. The HistoBistro will be set
up in the hall of the administrative building at
Minderbroedersberg 4-6, and the lectures and
workshop will be given in the adjacent rooms.
To provide more information, we are setting
up Brightlands Square in the hall of the law
faculty at Lenculenstraat 26, where you can
see demonstrations and presentations of
Data Visualisation, the Balance Belt, Grassa!
and MijnBreincoach (MyBraincoach).
In the same hall, there are virtual reality
projects by other organisations, and in the
adjacent Statenzaal there are Brightlands
lectures on the latest technological
developments, including the subjects
nanoscopic research, circular biobased
economy (by SappiMaastricht BV), mass
spectrometry and data visualisation.
For this tasteful evening, Onno Kleyn, culinary
journalist and author of Luilekkerland, will give
a lecture about his research into 400 years of
cookery in the Netherlands. Taste professor
and gastronome Peter Klosse will talk about
the taste of the future. If you’d like to have a go
at historical cooking yourself, then join in the
workshop given by Marleen Willebrands and
Peer Boselie. If all of this has given you a taste
for more, then come to the histo(rical)bistro for
a taste of the past!

andere de Stadsnomade die zich met een skate
ramp twee dagen nestelt op de parkeerplaats
achter het gebouw op de Kapoenstraat (p. 38),
de straattheaterartiest Petit Monsieur (p. 28),
wat er gebeurt op het Brightlands Square
(p. 29, 30 en 57) en bijvoorbeeld de robots en
drones van ons Robotlab (p. 32 en 59). En er is
veel meer, de keuze voor mij en mijn kinderen
lijkt weer onbeperkt.
Toen Jacques Reiners in 2018 afscheid nam
als hoofd van het bureau Studium Generale
kreeg hij van de Universiteit Maastricht
(UM), als initiator van het festival, de eretitel
PAS-ambassadeur. Daardoor behoudt hij
een adviserende rol en heeft hij ook in 2019
meegewerkt aan de totstandkoming van
het programma.
Maar er zijn meer mensen die het festival een
warm hart toedragen. Vier van hen hebben
we dit jaar gevraagd als ambassadeur op
te treden. Zij hebben een aantal van de
activiteiten er voor u uitgelicht en lichten
toe waarom. Maak kennis met PAS door hun
ogen, zij helpen je op weg bij jouw keuze.

Vrouwenveld
Als welzijnswerker
in Witte Vrouwenveld, waar
ik onder andere coördinator ben van de
Kunstketel, probeer ik altijd bruggen te bouwen. Bruggen tussen jong en oud en tussen
mensen met verschillende culturele achtergronden. De wijk moet een plek zijn waar iedereen zich welkom voelt. Dit welkome gevoel
heb ik ook geproefd bij voorgaande edities
van het PAS-festival. De verscholen tuinen en
binnenplaatsen, de aankleding, de variatie in
het programma en de verschillende bezoekers
maken het tot een feestje voor iedereen. De
Witte Vrouwenvelders raad ik dus aan eens
te gaan kijken. Het is minstens zo leuk als ons
eigen Manusje van Alles Festival. Kwartiertje
fietsen en je zit in een andere wereld en midden in de unieke sfeer die mij zo aanspreekt. Ik
ben benieuwd naar de lezingen over ons brein
en zelfhulpboeken (p. 14), migratiegedrag (p.
15) en stille armoede (p. 42). Ik neem een kijkje
in de kleinste disco ter wereld La Boite (p. 27
en 53), ben nieuwsgierig naar het programma
in de grote tuin van het Oud Gouvernement en

Toen ik in september
2016 als rector begon,
viel ik direct met mijn
neus in de boter. Hoe
beter te beginnen dan
met een driedaags PAS-festival in het kader
van het 40-jarig bestaan van de UM? En hoe
mooi dat de UM daarna besloot het PASfestival voor de toekomst te behouden. Ieder
jaar weer een feestelijke en interessante
start van ons academisch jaar waarbij de
universiteit de deuren openzet voor iedereen
die nieuwsgierig is naar kunst en wetenschap.
Zo ook voor mijn kinderen bleek vorig jaar.
We waren blij te ontdekken dat er in het volle
en rijke programma ook van alles zit voor de
jeugd. Dit jaar kijk ik dan ook uit naar onder

sluit graag af met het concert van de band
Mokoomba uit Zimbabwe (p. 52). Ik kijk weer uit
naar een heerlijk nazomerfeest aan het begin
van het drukke seizoen.

Toen ik eind 2015 als
asielzoeker aankwam
in Maastricht, werd
ik aangenaam verrast
door activiteiten en festivals die worden
georganiseerd door de Universiteit Maastricht
en daaraan gelieerde organisaties. Al snel
na mijn aankomst, leerde ik de stad kennen,
haar geschiedenis, haar achtergrond en de
mensen. Ik creëerde een netwerk en nam
aan zoveel mogelijk dingen deel. Al deze
activiteiten hebben ertoe geleid dat ik nog
meer geïnteresseerd ben geraakt in politiek,
immigratie en het bouwen van bruggen
tussen de lokale bevolking, internationals en
vluchtelingen. Door mijn deelname aan het
Take Twee-project tijdens het PAS-festival kan
ik dit jaar mijn verhaal delen en hoop ik mensen
om me heen te inspireren. Als je op zoek
bent naar inspiratie, ontmoet me dan bij Take
Twee (p. 31). Gelukkig heb ik met het Refugee
Project Maastricht een tweede familie in deze
internationale stad kunnen creëren. Ook zij
zijn op het festival aanwezig om ontmoetingen
te realiseren. Ga langs bij Taste & Talk (p. 31),
ontmoet anderen, leg contact en werk zo mee
aan het opbouwen van een gemeenschap
samen met vluchtelingen, immigranten, expats,
locals en internationale studenten. En als je
je afvraagt hoe Nederland voor asielzoekers
zoals ik al dan niet een thuis wordt, ga dan
luisteren naar de lezing van Arjen Leerkes
(p. 15). En vergeet niet: wees positief, glimlach,
inspireer anderen en geef me een high five als
je me ziet. Ik leer heel graag iedereen kennen!

De Tribunal bevindt
zich in het hart van het
PAS-festival waardoor het ieder jaar
weer bruist in en rondom het café. Ook ontvangen we hier alle artiesten voor een voedzame
maaltijd. In het café horen we alle reacties van
de artiesten en het publiek die met enthousiasme reageren op het PAS-programma. Als ik zelf
tussen het werken door tijd heb, ga ik graag
even kijken in de tuinen en de binnenpleinen
waar het altijd goed toeven is met leuke acts
en heerlijke muziek. In de weken voorafgaand
aan het festival probeer ik iedere café-bezoeker ervan te overtuigen dat ze toch echt eens
moeten gaan kijken naar wat er allemaal in
de universiteitsgebouwen wordt aangeboden.
Vaak denkt men dat het iets is van en voor de
universiteit. En wat de boer niet kent …. Terwijl
er toch echt voor iedereen iets te kiezen valt
en de P (Pleasure) van PAS overal ervaren kan
worden. Mijn tips? Pik eens een korte lezing
mee over bijvoorbeeld het belang van slaap
(p. 16) of creativiteit (p. 41). Ga vooral kijken in
de sfeervolle grote tuin van het Oud Gouvernement, naar bijvoorbeeld Sally Dansgezelschap
Maastricht (p. 27 en 54). Doe een dansje in de
piepkleine disco La Grand Boite (p. 27 en 53) en
vergeet niet langs te komen in ons café om te
vertellen over wat jou heeft verrast.

on Kapoenstraat for two days (p. 38), the street
theatre artist Petit Monsieur (p. 28), the events
at Brightlands Square (p. 29, 30 and 57) and the
robots and drones from our Robotlab (p. 32 and
59). And there’s lots more besides. Once again,
there seems to be an infinite choice for my
kids and I.
In 2018, when the initiator of the festival,
Jacques Reiners, left his position as head
of the Studium Generale office, Maastricht
University (UM) awarded him the honorary
title of PAS Ambassador. So he took up an
advisory role and has contributed to creating
the programme for 2019.
However, the festival is also supported by a
number of other people, and this year we have
asked four of them to act as ambassadors and
give their endorsement to the entertaining,
interesting and special nature of the festival.

As a welfare officer
at Witte Vrouwenveld,
where my tasks include
coordinating the community arts project Kunstketel, I always try to build bridges; bridges
between young and old and between people
from different cultural backgrounds. This sense
of being welcome is something I’ve felt at
previous editions of the PAS Festival. The hidden gardens and courtyards, the presentations,
the variety of the programme and the diversity
of the visitors make it a festival for everyone.
I’d certainly like to recommend the people of
Witte Vrouwenveld to go and take a look at the
PAS Festival! It’s just as much fun as our own
Manusje van Alles Festival. A fifteen-minute
bike ride and you’re in another world, right in
the middle of the unique atmosphere I enjoy
so much. I’m curious about the lectures on
our brain and self-help books (p. 21), migration
behaviour (p. 20) and silent poverty (p. 44). I’ll
be taking a look at the smallest disco in the
world La Boite (p. 27), I’m curious to see the
programme in the big garden of the Law Faculty, and I’d like to finish off with the concert by
the Zimbabwean band Mokoomba (p. 52). Once

When I started as
rector in 2016, I came at
just the right moment.
What better way to
kick off than with a three-day PAS Festival in
celebration of UM’s 40th anniversary? And it’s
really great that afterwards UM decided to
keep the PAS Festival going in the future. So
now every year there’s a festive and interesting
start to our academic year, when the university
opens its doors to anyone who’s curious about
art and science – including my children last
year. We were happy to see that the full, rich
programme has lots for youngsters too. So this
year, some of the things I’m looking forward
to are Stadsnomade, who are bringing their
skate ramp to the car park behind the building

When I arrived in
Maastricht at the end
of 2015 as an asylum
seeker, I was amazed by the activities and
festivals organised by Maastricht University
and its partner organisations. Soon after my
arrival, I got to know the city and its history,
background and people. I created a network
in Maastricht and took part in as many things
as possible. All these activities have led to my
increased interest in politics and immigration,
and in building bridges between locals, internationals and refugees in the city of Maastricht.
Being part of the Take Twee project at the
PAS Festival this year enables me to share my
story and inspire people around me. If you’re
looking for inspiration, come and meet me at
Take Twee (p. 31). Luckily, I’ve been able to
create a second family in this international city
with the Refugee Project Maastricht, and they
will be at the festival as well to meet people.
So come along to Taste & Talk (p. 31), to meet
others, make connections and help build a
community with refugees, immigrants, expats,
locals and international students. And if you’re
wondering whether or not the Netherlands has
become home to asylum seekers like me, then
go and listen to the lecture by Arjen Leerkes
(p. 20). And don’t forget: be positive, smile,
inspire others and give me a high five when
you see me. I'm very eager to get to know
every one of you!
The Tribunal is located
at the heart of the PAS
Festival, so every year
it’s teeming with activity
in the cafe and round
about. We also provide a nourishing meal
for all the artists. In the cafe, we hear all the
reactions from the artists and the public, who
are enthusiastic about the PAS programme. If
I get time in between working, I like to go and
look at the gardens and courtyards, where
there’s always a nice atmosphere with fun
acts and great music. In the weeks leading up
to the festival, I try to persuade everyone who
visits the cafe to go and look at all that’s on
offer in the university buildings. People often
think it’s only for the university. And they don’t
trust what they don’t know. But there really
is something for everyone there, and you can
feel the P (Pleasure) of PAS everywhere. My
tips? Go to one of the short lectures on the
importance of sleep (p. 20) or creativity (p.47),
for example. Definitely go to the atmospheric
big garden of the Law Faculty, to look at Sally
Dance Company Maastricht (p. 27 and 54), for
instance. Do a little dance in the tiny disco La
Grand Boite (p. 27 and 53) – and don’t forget to
come to our cafe to tell us about all the exciting
discoveries you’ve made.

Na het openingswoord van onze rector Rianne
Letschert om 19.00 uur, starten we met een
Nederlandstalige lezing van wetenschapsfilosoof Herman de Regt.
Na de lezing is er om 19.30 uur een muzikale
PAS-parade die start bovenop de Minderbroedersberg (locatie 3) en iedereen meevoert naar
de verschillende locaties. Het festival barst
dan daaropvolgend in alle gebouwen los. De
muziek hiervoor wordt speciaal gecomponeerd
door Syriër Marc Mahfoud. De objecten die
worden meegedragen zijn van Nightscapes
Productions.

gezonde en zieke cellen. Peters legt uit hoe deze kennis
kan bijdragen aan de strijd tegen ziekten, maar ook aan

The musicians from jazz duo Aquarius often swim between

The ferocious existence of a sailor, on a rickety boat in
distant waters, is one of the recurring themes in the music
of this band from Antwerp. We hear the harbours of the

unmistakable sailor blues, they keep following the call of
the ocean.
After a year of busking, gigging the Netherlands and
doing a few European tours, The Ragtime Rumours won
The European Blues Challenge. What do they sound like?
Imagine Tom Waits visiting Django Reinhardt, drinking a big
mug of coffee while listening to Robert Johnson. The result
is an energising mix of old-school ragtime, gypsy jazz and

Roger Moreno is a Swiss-Dutch musician and composer.
As the artistic leader of his Sinti ensemble Tabor, he has
devoted many years to the history and culture of Sinti and
Roma. He is well-known for his composition Requiem for
Auschwitz, which was premiered in Amsterdam, in 2012.
When he plays the accordion, he brings history to life
with his strong emotional music.
Dries is a rough diamond that has been polished in bars,
clubs and festivals. Vocals, guitar, harmonica and an
experienced, hoarse voice: a singer-songwriter could
hardly sound more pure. Dries performs dark Indie folk,
with influences of Bob Dylan, Will Oldham and Ry Cooder,
singing about the small and big problems in life with endless
pugnacity.

That’s why they organise house concerts, visit schools and

politeness and etiquette. We’re so busy communicating that
we sometimes forget how to communicate. While “liking”
on social media, we often fail to appreciate the real world
and above all to take care of it.
The Netherlands played an important role in the
development of the self-portrait art that arose during the
Renaissance. Simon Bus approaches self-portrait art from
the perspective of dance. With a floor of 2 by 2 metres as a
canvas, he portrays himself in poses and movements that
fluctuate between his ideal self-image and a caricature.

Opera of the falling is a poetic and visual study of the
loneliness of sorrow. It is a Virtual Reality Opera, inspired by
interviews with people who are psychologically vulnerable.
Using psychiatry as a mirror of the world we live in, the
experience calls for reflection and invokes universal recognition. The libretto is in Dutch.
Grassa! shows how bio-refinery can increase the foodgrade protein production of pasture lands by 50%. In
addition to cows, it is now possible for pigs and chickens
to digest this protein (and in the long run even for humans).
More efficient use of nutrients will reduce manure, nitrogen
and phosphate surpluses. Imports of soya meal will decrease drastically and local cycles will be closed. In short:
bio-refinery makes sustainable agriculture possible.

As a designer, Cas van Son focuses on interaction. He
challenges people to work together. His JAMFLOW project
aims to make musical instruments accessible to people
with no instrumental skills. As a musician, he’s familiar
with the connecting power and energy brought about by a
jam. Come to see his special instruments and create music
together with others.
Exhibition of the Jesuit collection by Theodoor van de
Velde (1873-1937). In response to the ‘marital crisis’ of the
1920s, gynaecologist Theodoor Hendrik van de Velde wrote
several books to save the institution of marriage. According
to him, eroticism was the foundation of marriage.
Exhibition of people with a migration background. The
city as a “house of the future” is one with residents of
many nationalities. A successful society requires knowing
each other's stories, or at least being open to them. So it’s
important to look at what connects us as humans, while
also considering what distinguishes us from one another
and makes us unique.

and interpreting the environment plays an important role
within robot technology. Although this is the most natural
thing in the world for humans, the same cannot be said for
machines. This demonstration will show you how robots
and drones analyse the world around them - so they can
assist us with mundane tasks, as well as some exceptional
ones!

Cave of Glass is an alternative contemporary interpretation
of Plato’s Allegory of the cave. This interactive light
installation is a flat-screen glass laboratory, a brewery
that plays with the perceptual confusion of reality. Here,
prisoners are no longer chained, but try to penetrate the
mysterious fragility of life through surgical rituals.
HistoBistro will be organised in a bistro setting. Historical
finger food and liquor brewed from a 17th-century recipe
can be tasted for free!

Scene to DNA Match
‘Wat goed smaakt, is voedzaam’, zei ooit een wijze arts
uit de elfde eeuw. Culinaire historici Peer Boselie en
Marleen Willebrands illustreren deze verklaring tijdens een
workshop met oude manuscripten en boeken over koken
en tuinieren. Ondertussen worden er historische hapjes en
schnaps geserveerd.

of the 17,000 kilometre-long border has already been photographed. The images of his journey - the start of a much

Traces of magic – surprising and always crossing over into
the unusual – are woven throughout the PAS Festival by
Nightscapes Productions. Their distinctive, unconventional
artworks and installations are inspired by the combination
of location and theme, taking the space where the object is
situated as their starting point.
We’re familiar with all the terms from detective series:
scene of the crime, forensics and crime scene investigation,
etc. Through a simulated crime scene and a lecture on forensic DNA analysis (see pages 15 and 19), The Maastricht
Forensic Institute will introduce you to how trace evidence
is safeguarded at the crime scene, how this trace evidence
is used in forensic DNA analysis and the conclusions that
can be drawn from the analysis.

GATHERING OF THE MAASTRICHT TRIBES
On the Art Wall, Stadsnomade displays the outcome of
the creative workshops in which children from various
neighborhoods participated over the course of the summer.
Addressing topics as community, citizenship, arts and
culture.
SEASONAL CLOSURE BY STADSNOMADE

Location 4: Kapoenstraat 2, Parking Lot
Spring and summer 2019, kick-started the collaboration of
the skating community Stadsnomade (City Nomad) with
various neighborhoods of Maastricht. Stadsnomade travels
through neighborhoods with De Karavaan (The Caravan)
and gives free skating lessons to the young. Additionally,
the artistic team facilitates – through workshops – an
inspiring pop-up environment that encourages creativity
and freedom of expression.
THE LIVE FINE STREET ART-WALL
Artists Dave de Leeuw and Mariëlle Yogi will translate
the work made by children into a grand canvas.
SKATEBOARDING DAYS
Free skate sessions on the mini ramp or try out tricks on
the flat grounds. Till 21:00 Stadsnomade mentors will be
available for free skate workshops for children in the age
of 6 to 15. Skateboards, helmets and other necessary
protection will be provided.
At the PAS Festival De Karavaan lands for the last time.
Everybody is welcome to skate and to get an impression
of what was created this year. The aim is to keep creating,
in a variety of places, with the children of our city. Come
join the forces and get to know the project better.
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL, JAM SESSION
Stadsnomade invites all instrumentalists and vocalists. Feel
welcome in the tent for a low-key jam session. Musicians
participating in the opening parade of the festival will land

volledig bij bewust zijnde patiënten het vermogen om te
communiceren als gevolg van een ernstige motorische
verlamming. Om patiënten in deze noodlottige toestand te
kunnen helpen, wordt momenteel communicatie middels
de technologie van brain-computer interfacing ontwikkeld.
Hierdoor kan men communiceren door middel van

personnel for its own military Common Security and
Defence Policy (CSDP) operations abroad. Academic work
assumes that these decisions are taken at the highest
political level, yet new research shows that unaccountable
lobby groups influence EU decisions on CSDP operations.
Erman Atak will focus on the first empirical findings on
Operation “Sophia,” the largest, most expensive operation
to date.

Can you be poor in the Netherlands? In a rich city like
Maastricht, how do you cope when you can’t make ends
meet? Is government aid enough to lift you out of poverty?
And if not, who will help you? What does poverty mean
for the community and how could it affect the future?
This lecture will explore these questions.
In the so-called “locked-in” syndrome, fully conscious
patients have lost the ability to communicate as a
consequence of severe motor paralysis. To help patients
affected by this devastating condition, motor-independent
communication through brain-computer interfacing is being
developed. This allows affected patients to communicate
by means of their brain signals. Bettina Sorger will tell you
how.
While there is ample evidence of ancient games in the
archaeological record, we know very little about how these
games were actually played. Cameron Browne will explain
how he is applying modern AI techniques to the problem of
reconstructing ancient games, why this is useful and what
insights it might provide.

Over time, arterial vessel walls can thicken, leading to
the formation of an atherosclerotic plaque. Rupture of a
so-called vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque is the main
cause of cardiovascular disease. Recently, researchers in
Maastricht were able to visualise the plaque composition,
using new imaging techniques. New research aims to test
the hypothesis that patients with vulnerable plaques benefit
from surgery, while patients with stable plaques respond
better to treatment with medication.

Quetzal Duo performs traditional South Mexican music
in an intimate and personal setting. This largely unknown
yet extraordinarily beautiful repertoire is performed by
the magical voice of the Mexican singer Sofía Díaz. She is
accompanied by guitarist Jasper De Kind, who combines
classical guitar with influences from jazz, flamenco and
other kinds of world music, fully adapted to Sofía's
profound and sensitive voice.
Roger Moreno is a Swiss-Dutch musician and composer. As
artistic leader of his Sinti-ensemble Tabor he has devoted
many years to the history and culture of Sinti and Roma. He
is well-known for his composition Requiem for Auschwitz
that had its premiere in 2012 in Amsterdam. He brings
history to life with his strong emotional music when he
plays the accordion
The Kaleidoscope Trio is formed by Isabel Rico (piano), Guy
Foret (clarinet) and Hannah Heim (bassoon), all students
at Conservatorium Maastricht. They want to make their
music accessible to everybody, especially those who don’t
normally have the opportunity to listen to classical music.
That’s why they organise house concerts, visit schools and
play at benefit events, etc.

AHA is a newly formed trio, with a shared passion for
spontaneous explorations of strange melodies. Featuring an
international line-up, the music of this trio consists entirely

For many years, André Cruyt has been a connoisseur and
lover of French chanson. He interprets Brel, Brassens,
Vian, Leclerc and others with respect for lyrics and music.
He is accompanied by two pure-bred musicians: Mario
Vermandel on double bass and Pol Depoorter on second
guitar and mandolin.
The Hillbilly Moonshiners is a contemporary bluegrass band
from the south of the Netherlands. The band will play all the
hits and some less familiar tunes by the British folk band
Mumford and Sons. They might even surprise you with a
bootleg or a cover the band did themselves during one of
their shows. The Hillbilly Moonshiners play Mumford and
Sons – about the closest tribute to Mumford and Sons you

gave Mokoomba’s music an international perspective from
the beginning, incorporating everything from soukous to ska
and salsa, along with local musical traditions.

preserved by only 150 families worldwide. Noam started a
year-long research project to find out more about Ladino

connection to the songs. The innovative arrangements
present a fragrant mix of Middle Eastern music, North

The Netherlands played an important role in the
development of the self-portrait art that arose during the
Renaissance. Simon Bus approaches self-portrait art from
the perspective of dance. With a floor of 2 by 2 metres as a
canvas, he portrays himself in poses and movements that
fluctuate between his ideal self-image and a caricature.
From a young age, Jori Meijer loved reading, watching
and listening to stories. Later on, she started to create
her own. Her work is all about vibrations, which she
finds in movement and in sound. She uses her body as
an instrument to tell stories, to create different vibes,
to arouse, to get away from reality and vice versa.
SALLY Dance Company Maastricht, directed by Stefan
Ernst and Ronald Wintjens, invites young international
choreographers to research and develop new work during
Danslab. SALLY will present choreographic work from their
2019 edition of Danslab, alongside repertoire from their
current theatre productions.

important to look at what connects us as humans, while

Opera of the falling is a poetic and visual study of the
loneliness of sorrow. It is a Virtual Reality Opera, inspired by
interviews with people who are psychologically vulnerable.
Using psychiatry as a mirror of the world we live in, the
experience calls for reflection and invokes universal

The Climate Collage is a participatory and creative
workshop about the climate crisis, which was invented in
France. Using information cards, players learn to make a

climate crisis. This results in a complex and artistic network

Exhibition of the Jesuit collection by Theodoor van de
Velde (1873-1937). In response to the "marital crisis" of the
1920s, gynaecologist Theodoor Hendrik van de Velde wrote
several books to save the institution of marriage. According
to him, eroticism was the foundation of marriage.
Preview of the expo by David Peskens who travels along
the former borders of the Iron Curtain in his old camper. Half
of the 17,000 kilometre-long border has already been photographed. The images of his journey - the start of a much
bigger project on Eastern Europe - can be seen in
his camper.

Spring and summer 2019, kick-started the collaboration of
the skating community Stadsnomade (City Nomad) with
various neighborhoods of Maastricht. Stadsnomade travels
through neighborhoods with De Karavaan (The Caravan)
and gives free skating lessons to the young. Additionally,
the artistic team facilitates – through workshops – an
inspiring pop-up environment that encourages creativity
and freedom of expression.
Cave of Glass is an alternative contemporary interpretation
of Plato’s Allegory of the cave. This interactive light
installation is a flat-screen glass laboratory, a brewery
that plays with the perceptual confusion of reality. Here,
prisoners are no longer chained, but try to penetrate the
mysterious fragility of life through surgical rituals.
At the PAS-festival De Karavaan lands for the last time.
Everybody is welcome to skate and to get an impression of
what was created this year. The aim is to keep creating, in a
variety of places, with the children of our city. Come join the
forces and get to know the project better!

liggen binnen een straal van ca. 500 meter.

PAS is gratis toegankelijk. Omdat sommige
zaaltjes een bescheiden capaciteit hebben en
we niet meer mensen mogen toelaten dan dat
er zitplaatsen zijn, kan de toegang geweigerd

GATHERING OF THE MAASTRICHT TRIBES
On the Art Wall, Stadsnomade displays the outcome of
the creative workshops in which children from various
neighborhoods participated over the course of the summer.
Addressing topics as community, citizenship, arts and
culture.

THE LIVE FINE STREET ART-WALL
Artists Dave de Leeuw and Mariëlle Yogi will translate
the work made by children into a grand canvas.

SKATEBOARDING DAYS
Free skate sessions on the mini ramp or try out tricks on
the flat grounds. Till 21:00 Stadsnomade mentors will be
available for free skate workshops for children in the age
of 6 to 15. Skateboards, helmets and other necessary
protection will be provided.
Traces of magic – surprising and always crossing over into
the unusual – are woven throughout the PAS Festival by
Nightscapes Productions. Their distinctive, unconventional
artworks and installations are inspired by the combination
of location and theme, taking the space where the object is
situated as their starting point.
ZIRCONA ZIRKUS
A creative hip-hop collective from Brussels that shares a
vision of bringing light into our lives through music, arts
and performance. Showtime 21:00.
The central location is the Student Services
Centre at Bonnefantenstraat 2, where you can
find the festival office and the info desk. All the
other locations are within a 500-metre radius.

a limited seating capacity that cannot be
exceeded. Admission could be denied.

wheelchairs, but do take into account that it
will take a little longer to get from one place
to another in the buildings.

In the case of bad weather, outdoor activities
will be covered or moved indoors as much as
possible.

It is extremely difficult to park in this part of
the city centre. The road signs of Maastricht
City Council’s parking information system
indicate where parking capacity is available
at that time.

Muntverkoop bij de bars. Men kan zowel
contant betalen als pinnen, behalve op de
Kapoenstraat. Hier kan slechts contant worden
betaald. De drankverkoop op de locaties 1, 2
en 3 is in handen van leden van Harmonie Sint
Pieter 1890.
Café Tribunal, Tongersestraat 1
De Tribunal ligt in het hart van het festival en
draait mee met optredens buiten (bij goed
weer). Uiteraard kan men daar ook even
stoppen voor iets te eten en te drinken.
Coffeelovers, Bonnefantenstraat 2
Open van 19.00 tot 22.00 uur. Geniet van
heerlijke koffie, thee en cappuccino.
Gratis WiFi en een relaxte atmosfeer
zorgen voor een heerlijk rustmoment
bij Coffeelovers.

WiFi and the relaxed atmosphere make
Coffeelovers the ideal spot to take a break.
